Cowboys & Aliens - Jake Lonergan Gauntlet Weapon

Is the handle just "L" shaped or does it connect to the other side like a "U"?

It's an L-Shape, as you can see here in this photo from the front:

Its difficult to compare the cup to the screen grabs for a few reasons, one being that the screen used gauntlet appears to be done mostly with cgi, so variations in shapes and greeblies will always be there. What we need is an actual photo of the hero gauntlet prop used in the film, when he is walking around with it on his wrist.

GREAT! I was just going to ask about a photo of the HUD :)

Has anyone ever played with mock HUDs using clear acrylic sheets and cutting grooves into them and lighting underneath with LEDs? I'm thinking about trying it with one of my Slurpee cups. Add a few LEDs on top with a piece cut similar to the above screenshot and it lights up when turned on.

The Rocketeer Thanks, that's a good idea about putting a switch on the ... are we calling it a handle? I've seen people do HUD type displays with acrylic, but apparently it depends on the brightest of the LEDs you use, the ambient lighting, and the thickness of the acrylic. I'm sure someone else here knows more though...

technically the two lower blasters are there, they just arent extended, if you put lights in the ends of them, it could look correct.

Ahh, couldn't tell from the photos. And yes, I could have asked you this on Twitter :p And apparently you have a Doctorate here...

This would be more accurate.

I picked one up at 7-11 yesterday. The cup gauntlet is definitely not accurate to the level of the typical RPFer, The whole thing would be covered with red lines. I can tell you that the cup version was modeled from scratch to fit the cup. The placement and proportions of the features are funky or missing.

also the 'height' of the real "closed" gauntlet matches the height of the short "emitter" on the 7-11 cup.

The closed Gauntlet was physical and the open gauntlet was physical. The animated gauntlet (open/close) was CGI. We don't posses the alien technology to truly make it work.

I have two cups on hand if anyone needs one or two. I'm almost done with my gauntlet didnt need the two spare cups in case I messed up. Just PM me.

well 12 more hours in and it does not seem like I have gotten very far, but I did get some parts out of the mold and started on the final build...

I rotocast the gauntlet to keep it mostly hollow. You can see that I do not have the ability to degas my silicone :unsure

I made an attempt to rotocast the guns and then add a flat bottom to keep the hollowing out to a minimum. I think it worked ok

I don't have my LED's yet so I shined a flashlight through the guns just to get an idea of what it might look like - although these are white and I ordered blue superbrites.

here are the resin guns and gauntlet all ready to go for electronics with lenses in place

here's an angle where you can see the aluminum bar reinforcing the handle

I do intend to try the LED backlit headsup display if there is time - I will make a protoype out of the same plastic I used for the lenses and if that works will try to get one laser engraved. if not, it will still be a cool costume piece without the HUD

Hey looks good! I've got a few cups and decided to go the Papercraft to resin build idea because the cup is far too large for my wrist.

1/4" acrylic with SMD LEDs along the edge is what I'll be doing for my HUD. All you need to do is etch into the acrylic with an exacto and it will light right up...

just got my cup thursday just now opening it up looks got pads in it i would put a pics but i got cought in a big storm on the lake the my new $500.00 camera is brokern..

kimncris Great Pics

That looks pretty darn fabulous, kimnchris. The guns look very accurate.

So these cups are way too big on some, and way too small on others? Not at all surprising, I guess. Anyone happen to measure the opening?

It's 2 7/8 inches at the base and 3 5/16 at the top. I've already cracked it open at the seam so that i can chuck some magnets in it so I can take it off and on easier.

wow - that's the best screenshot I've seen yet. Way more detail than any previous one :/

anyway - prior to seeing that pic, here was my meager attempt at a paint scheme.

I just have to keep reminding myself "It's only a costume, it's only a costume...."

Hmmm... the gauntlet actually looks more goldish in that screen cap with some blueish, brown and reddish weathering.

I thought it was more os a steel/aluminum color. I'll have to go look at the trailer a few more times, to see what it looks like in different light setups.
