Cowboys & Aliens - Jake Lonergan Gauntlet Weapon

Seriously, I think the one that's in the film is much smaller than the one on the cup. I say this because of the way it seems to be close fitting around Daniel Craig's wrist in the shots. Does anyone else think so or am I misjudging the size?

I hope not since mine is about the same length as the one on the cup, sculpted from scratch around an arm cast. It is a different shape though, more oval than a circle.

So I added my silver accents. Of course took some liberties on where to put them since this isn't a very accurate design. But did the "piping" that looks closest to the screencap, 1 of the "toothed" circuit looking pieces, and then these faux "USB" ports for lack of a better term.

Next up is the oily and copper colors...then some rust, and some blackening/antiquing!

How do you turn these on? Is there a switch, or just a push button so they only light when its pressed?

SapGoblin: I think in the second pic you posted that that silver section you painted was actually lit in the trailer clip.

Does anyone with electrical skills think there is a way to add more lights to this easily?

There is a small recessed slide switch to turn it on. It's pretty easy to add lights- I plan on adding lights to the sides on mine. I made up some small LED boards a while ago that are perfect for this- I'll post pics when I do it.

well this is what mine looked like the last time I saw it... hopefully I didn't just make a $90 mistake. We'll see tomorrow I guess.

I don't think it's a mistake at all- the Slurpee cup version really isn't that accurate at all when I compare it to the screen shots. I think it's great for a Halloween costume but it's hardly a replica. I'd really like to make one that moves (and after doing some sketches I think I've figured out how) but I'm going to have to change some of the dimensions a bit to make it work. At a bare minimum it's going to have to be at least .50" to .625" thick to make it work. There's no way to get it to have the range of motion of the screen item- it is an alien device after all. :)

kimncris - I think your pieces look GREAT...they're going to be a Hell of a lot closer to the real thing than the Slurpee cup anyhow.

I'm just as happy to paint up and slightly mod my $7 piece...but we're all in agreement about it's inaccuracies.

speaking of leds - the one in the movie appears to have 2 white LED bar graphs. anyone have a source for these? I can only find red, or red yellow green.

I think you're right...but for now, I'm just going to blacken the centers out like on the right of the 1st reference pic in the 1st post here.

I found some blue led bars at Sperkfun that will probably do for the costume. Hopefully next weeks I'll have some pictures. also sparkfun sells blue superbrite leds for $20 for a pack of 100. That seemed like a pretty good deal if you need some leds for your cup model.

This is how I plan to mod mine:

I'll probably sculpt one from scratch and cast it with a reinforced aluminum bar for support.

In this photo, there's a lot more details that are noticeably different between the cup replica and the actual prop.

Ya looks like they did the cup for part open part closed. Its more stream lined when closed... They never go off anything really used that be too smart... LOL

*delurking* Can't resist jumping on this for SDCC. But before I send a friend to 7-11, or drive the 60+ miles in the hopes I get lucky at the closest one... looking at the screencaps, do you guys think it'd be more accurate to get two cups and err, kitbash them together? So you'd have... 4 emitters on the front instead of 2?

I mean, obviously it's still not going to be super accurate or anything, but trying to figure out what supplies I need to get it as good as I can in the time I have. Thought I'd ask for advice.

Kind of fascinated by the mention in Geek Lounge tutorial of mounting a vibrating motor inside... it'd also be pretty awesome to have the lights activate with a flick of your wrist. Electronics aren't really my area (lack of experience), so not sure what you'd need for that (tilt sensor might be too sensitive). But it'd be cool.

I'm no electrical expert either, but from what the Geek Lounge shows, adding a switch is super-easy. As for where to place that switch, when the gauntlet is activated, there's a handle for Jake to hold/grab. I'm thinking of making permanent handle with a thumb switch to turn it on and off.

As for kitbashing or not, originally I wasn't planning to myself, but I grabbed two anyway just because and now I think I'll do that to have the four emitters.

technically the two lower blasters are there, they just arent extended, if you put lights in the ends of them, it could look correct.

There's some other details I've noticed that are different after looking at it more.
1. The two upper blasters on the cup version are curved more than the two upper blasters on the actual prop. That's one thing I've noticed.
2. The "dial" thing on top of the right blaster is grooved on the actual prop while its smooth on the cup.
3. There appears to be some extensions on the back of the gauntlet that extends back (up towards the shoulder) on the actual prop while there isn't anything on the cup version (which is understandable as if it was on the cup, it'd be lopsided).
