Captain America Rescue Build (Complete PG 3)

Re: Captain America Rescue Build WIP

man thank you for the idea for that shield :)

i was thinking for a while how i would do this best, and how to get wood bent etc, but this is a fantastic idea :) now i only need to find a big enough cardboard thingie :)

awesome work :)

Re: Captain America Rescue Build WIP

I just used a Cardboard Project Board. You can find them in the US pretty much anywhere that sells school supplies or art supplies, not sure if they're that easy to find where you are. The part I used was 36" x 24" which is perfect for this project. I ended up scaling my shield down to 23" because I forgot to measure before putting on the resin and missed about 1/2" on each side. The board is great too because you can tape together the two flaps to get your curve.

Re: Captain America Rescue Build WIP

Any suggestions on what to use to attach the straps? I was thinking some kind of glue just to hold it in place until I lay over top layer and that should hold it, but I'd rather not have them pull out after I go to all that trouble. Here's what I've got going on.

Re: Captain America Rescue Build WIP

Man this is awesome. Keep it up, can't wait to see the finished product.

Re: Captain America Rescue Build WIP

These are the boots I got in yesterday:

Not what you'd call accurate, but they're brown and leather at least :lol
They're a little bit more pointy than I would have liked, but I'm pretty sure people are going to be looking at the 3 ft red white and blue shield more than my shoes.

Also got in my gaitors/leggings/spats which will cover up the less than accurate markings on the boots and got my suspenders as well. Fun times ahead.

Haven't worked on my shield as much as I should. Still need to sand the back smooth, paint that side gold (it's gold in the movie), get the straps attached (already put a 45° angle bend in them) , and then put the top layer on and either resin it or fiberglass it.

I plan on going to Fan Days in Irving, TX on Saturday in what I have done of the costume just to break in the boots a little bit and get the feel of walking around in all those straps and belts.

Re: Captain America Rescue Build WIP

I've never heard of the brand before. They're Golden Retriever. Not sure on how old they are and they don't look like anything currently on the Golden Retriever website. However old they are, they're in really fantastic condition. Leather is supple and the soles show barely any wear.

Re: Captain America Rescue Build WIP

Didn't end up getting dressed up today because I still haven't gotten the liner for my helmet delivered. I did get a chance to finish up the paint on it though.

had to do a butt load of sanding because it was painted red as a firefighter helmet, so I had to get that off so the white primer would stick correctly.

Have goggles and a liner on order and other than a holster that I'm still looking around for and the jacket, I'll be good to go soon.

Re: Captain America Rescue Build WIP

Got the top layer spray glued in place.

Lots of clamps! :lol
I'll run a coat of resin around the edges and across the top to get it all nice and sealed and then paint the sucker. The straps are attached as well. Just using duct tape and the pressure of the outer layer. That should do just fine.

Re: Captain America Rescue Build WIP

Thanks guys!

Ha, ha! I guess I over estimated the size of the A on the front of the helmet by a little bit :lol

That's a glaring oversight on my part. I guess I'll try scaling that down a wee bit.

Now that I think about it, I think I was thinking about Ultimate Cap's helmet when I did the A

Also realizing that my shield is a bit enormous compared to this shot with the shield rotated on his back to be lined up with his shoulders.
Shield2.jpg

I think if I reduce my shield size from 22 x 30 to 16.5 x 21, it should be the right size. Evans is 6'1" and so am I so I just based the new measurements off of my shoulder width. If it's not accurate to the movie, it'll be at least in scale to my body type. Guess it's good I don't have to scale it up though. I shouldn't have based the size off the Marvel replica, but this isn't anything that my Dremel can't fix easily.

So, printed this out:

Hmmm... It should be the right size based on the previous image, but compared to the original size, it just looks tiny! I might add an inch on the outside just to make it a little bigger.

Re: Captain America Rescue Build WIP

Found an alright picture of the straps and their placement and cut it down to just the meat.
Straps.jpg

It looks like the forearm strap is closer to the middle of the forearm. The handle looks to be similar in design to a leather purse strap (leather tube shape with seam on one edge) and closer to the edge, but that may just be because of the perspective of this shot. I'll make adjustments to my strap placement just so I can make sure my elbow is covered.

Re: Captain America Rescue Build WIP

Got these in as goggles.

Painting the frames silver, adding grey foam to the back and replacing the strap with white elastic.
