CA2: Winter Soldier Black Widow Build -Buckle Sculpt Update

Hello, all!

I am currently researching the Captain America 2: Black Widow outfit, of which there are only a handful of good pictures out. Just like Avengers, the fabric is difficult to find because we don't know what it is, so how do you search for it? It's a textured fabric, like Avengers, not quite the same, I think. It looks heavier than just some kind of spandex, especially when paired with the leather, and I'd imagine it would have to have some stretch to it to be this fitted and still be able to move. Any ideas? I have a sample of a dotted spandex from the first BW thread on order to see how it looks, but I'd love to find something more textured with a little more weight to it.

Here's the pics I currently have. I was told today that the Black Widow poster image, while we know it's been photoshopped, I've been told her entire body was computer generated (not sure if it's true or not)

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

There are some clear shots on google images I've found. They show it is still black, but with leather sides now and smaller sections of different fabrics.

Also working on this for a friend and looking for cheap yet still viable options!

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

My biggest wonder is, what kind of fabric is it, and does it stretch? Or perhaps the leather provides just enough stretch. I'm usually pretty good at sourcing fabrics but I have no clue what to call this stuff.

I just ordered some different samples of ballistic nylon because I need it for Mystique's flight suit anyway, but I wonder if it's something like this: http://www.onlinefabricstore.net/pr...840-denier-coated-ballistic-nylon-fabric-.htm I heard they might have used something like this in the Avengers suit, but if there's no stretch, will it be uncomfortable and impossible to move it, I wonder...

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

The fabric that you've linked looks pretty similar to the model of the suit.

I think that if you use that and use leather (or pleather if the budget doesn't allow it) for the other patches, it would look pretty canon. I think that the leather patches on the auit would give you some stretch if the nylon is too stiff, but I could be wrong.

You could try a less stiff nylon with a small holed jersey on top? maybe?

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

I'll wait for my samples to see... I did just notice something, looking at all the hi-rez... All the textured nylon bits are cut on the bias. That will allow for some stretch as well. This thing is going to have to be tailored to the nines still.

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

Hello, I'm also making the Cap 2 Black Widow costume and have been trying to find a fabric as well. My monetary constraints keep me from being able to spring for anything too extravagant, but I think that just adds an extra dimension of fun to the challenge. I've looked at a slew of fabric options both online and at local stores (I'm fortunate enough to be close to Seattle Fabrics) and have had a little bit of luck.

Thus far, I've gotten some samples from Spandex World and I'm leaning toward making the majority of her costume out of 4-Way stretch spacer mesh. I was initially a little concerned about the scale of the mesh portion, but it's not too bad. The reverse side is comfortably smooth and it's plenty opaque. The 2-Way mesh also looks decent on their site (they were out when I got samples, good to see it's been restocked); it doesn't have the degree of stretch I had hoped for but might also be viable depending on construction methods.

For the smoother accent on her suit, I'm thinking of using 4-Way stretch matte vinyl; I got some of the 4-Way stretch leather but - as great as its degree of stretch is - the pattern is more pronounced than I'd like.

If anyone would like, I can take some more-detailed photos of the mesh sample for reference. What do you all think?

Here are a few more reference images showing the side and back of the costume, as well as some of the promo art:

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

Anyone have any suggestions as to a premade catsuit or jumpsuit that would work for this? I can't sew worth beans. ;) And I've got most of the accessories. Just need the right suit.

Hi everyone! I'm new to posting but am a big lurker! :lol

I started to make my suit today! I'm using a textured stretchy jersey material which actually looks pretty good! I just need to get some faux stretchy leather type material so I can continue. Inside out, sleeveless and only tacked for now, but I'm happy with it so far!

I'm a bit stuck on the patch, because obviously one hasn't been released to buy yet! I'm thinking of making it out of foam or something similar as I can't embroider one myself! :)

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

I'm in the early stages of planning this out, too. Probably going to go the same way I did Avengers BW, spandex with a black mesh over it for texture. Since I'll be wearing this all day at a con, comfort and movement are very important to me! Can't wait till the movie comes out so we can see more details. :D

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

Well, I finally did find something that would work! It's a new Robert Kaufman fabric called Bisou pique, the only place I could find it for sale was on Etsy. I also found some wedge boots with a seam down the center front I'm going to try to alter.

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

Still in the patterning/mock-up phase on the suit, but I have some progress on the Widow's Bites. I've never sculpted and made a mold of anything before, so this is a learning process (and if anyone has any tips, I'm all ears.) I couldn't get the body symmetrically smooth with just clay, so I got some plastic tubes from Dick Blick, heated them up and squished them to get a flatter, rounded shape. I filled it with clay and am carefully sculpting the ends (hopefully without them popping off). I was thinking I need a two-part mold... and since I can't make a clay bed, I was thinking about sticking a skewer into the short end and suspending it from the top of my mold box in a piece of styrofoam until the first half sets. Does this sound like a good, or terrible idea?

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

Curious as to why you can't make a clay bed-you know you can use plasticine, right? Dollar stores carry it. What are you using for the negative, plaster? Silicone will be a better bet, if you are casting them in resin. Looking forward to seeing this build progrogress. Oh, Hot Yoys has their Widow figure up on their site, the pictures are great!

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

Not a good reference for fabric but for the design elements, you can use the Hot Toys figure. Unfortunately there's no shots of the suit's rear from HT, but the screen grab posted above should be a good reference shot.

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

Because the ends of the bites are sculpted in clay. I am using silicone for the negative. I'm still trying to think of the right way to attach it to an elastic bracelet though. I was thinking of sanding out a notch in the back and gluing some kind of bar to it, and putting the elastic through that. (I'm flying by the seat of my pants here, honestly ;) )

I had looked at those pics! The seams are very accurate, unfortunately I still can't see the collar or the "v" shape on her back (which I'm thinking may have been included so they had a way to hide the harness wires when they did wirework). I'm going to make up my own design for the collar and back, but leave extra seam allowance in case I get a better view later.

Now, one thing I can't figure out is the straps on top of her shoulder. They look like beveled rubber straps. Any ideas?

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow

Quick update as I've got my mock-up of the bodice done. I'm using stretch denim which is similar weight to my stretch pique and I'm going to make the leather part separate, but top-stitched on. Have a few changes to make to this, but I'm going to build a mock of the whole suit first to make sure I can actually move in it. Because I haven't been able to find a clear shot on how the collar or back V is handled, I made up my own design here... all I know is there's no collar seam at the very front so I included it into the front piece.

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow Build

Thank you!!

I finished my buckle sculpt, and before I pour the mold, does anyone have any tips for me? This is really my first time sculpting. Does this look ok? I am using sulfur-based monster clay, I couldn't get it smoother. I'm also not positive on the color since some pictures show silver and red, and some black and red, and while the silver could just be the shine at a certain angle, the toy seems to have silver.

Also, need more eye make-up, but got my hair colored today, I'm hoping to finish a wearable version in a week for C2E2

Re: Cap 2 Black Widow Build -Buckle Sculpt Update

No answer, I went ahead and made the mold, and it came out beautifully. Now I'm just trying to figure out how I'm going to attach it to a 1.5" webbing. I heard I can add acrylic paint to the resin to make it black, but anyone know of any good enamel paints that will get the red color?

I wish I could just dye my hair. But I'm trying to grow it out so it's too long for this costume! Baaaah XD (Also I suck at props so no help for you there. But I can't wait to see your costume!! :D)
