BZP-IRONMAN Build

Good news! Found a local supplier of the Triple Glaze that had some products that weren't in the recall! We're back in business!

Also, stopped by the auto store for paint and did settle on the Dark Cherry metallic. Closest of all the colors we assessed. Stand by for updates!

Ok. First off: The Dark Cherry Metallic is the perfect color, hands down. Secondly, (I was really on the fence quite a while about which method to go with.) I'm going the Smooth-On route with my finish. Did a test today and "wow". I'm attaching a few pix, but they really don't do much justice as it relates to the overall beauty and durability of the finish.

I am uploading shots in different lighting and environments to give an idea of how it looks, but again, metallic paint doesn't shoot well. The color and finish is just amazing.

Technique:
• 3 Coats of Elmer's glue (uncut)
• Two coats of Smooth-On 65D (apply second coat after first is no longer "tacky" but hasn't fully cured)
• 1 coat of Duplicolor Filler Primer
• 1 coat of Duplicolor Dark Cherry Metallic
• 2 coats of Krylon Triple Thick Glaze

You may want to do 2 coats of primer. It depends on how good your final Smooth-On coat looks. I did lightly sand the Smooth-On before priming, but that was just to guarantee some tooth for the Primer to bite into.

Oh yeah, the last photo is of my table. Wife should be home soon, I might want to get that cleaned up a bit, lol.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

Really loving the finish you managed to get using the smooth on mate, did you get it directly from their website?...oh and for your sake i hope thats not the wifes best dining table lol
I think i'm going to go the smooth on finish on my next project as the finish is as close to plastic as you can get i think

Keep up the great work dude

Thanks for the comments!

Actually, a friend who does model-making had some left-overs he gave me to try out. When I run out, says he'll get me some more. Yes, it's the good table, but I'm extra-vigilant to make sure it doesn't get messed up. Lol.

Really nice. I've been doing this method almost exactly. I'm having some issues with bubbles in the smooth-on 65d. Did you have that problem? If so, how did you resolve it? I don't see any in your photos.

Great work.

Thanks! No bubbles at all. Just make sure to keep the SmoothOn coats very thin and brush it out till you don't see bubbles.

Wow, no sanding?

how easy does it crack of you flex it?

I haven't done a "torture test" to see if it cracks under extreme pressure yet. However, it is quite rigid and what slight bending I've applied takes a fair amount of pressure to exert. So I'm thinking if you got hit by a tank shell it might crack, but then again, I'm not looking to go into combat! lol.

Quick update. Both legs done, neck plate and seal done. Helmet modified to have a more round side profile, (looking pretty good, might roll with it as is.)

Still much to do and tweak before I start painting.

Great work! I'm curious to see a piece finished and painted with smooth on. I'm also curious to know what it all sounds like when wearing it. I imaging it might be kinda noisy.

Have you tackled the gauntlets yet? I've tried a few times with some craft foam using J0wes template, but haven't been happy with the results. Not sure what I am going to do here.

Thanks! And you're in luck. Just finished painting the right shin. The first pics are of the PVA applied. Second is Primer stage and final pix are painted and clear-coated. I didn't get a shot of the Smooth-On stage. I was just focused on getting it right. I'll shoot pix of the the Smooth-On stage on the next shin. Again, the pix don't do the finish justice. It's just plain gorgeous in real life.

Been working on the forearm piece and now we have a completed arm.

I am curious as to how much arm movement you have using this method? I have my bicep and forearm done and wanted to do this same thing, but when I test fit.it, I can't bend my arm to even a 90 degree angle even. I guess if I have this done by halloween I should bring a really long straw to drink with, haha.

Damn Base:eek....i knew your finish was going to be good...but WOW....looks awesome mate, i know what you mean about seeing it "in the flesh" mate, as my project lookes better than it does in photos.

If only i had come across your post a month earlier:facepalm.....oh well next project will be finished using your method for sure

I can hardly wait for the final suit up picture now:cool

Amazing work, keep us updated :thumbsup

Thanks! Will keep you posted for sure. Hope to get alot done on it this weekend. We'll see.

Got to give credit where it's due. This method isn't mine, it actually has its origins with Xrobots on these forums.

I can't wait for the suit-up photos either… means I'll finally be finished!

Very easy to bend your arms. No problems drinking on Halloween. I guarantee it or your money back.
