Building the Red October

I think the light grey was the same Tamiya Light grey primer I use on the Death Star. And IIRC the dark grey was a Duplicolor primer. Weathering was pastel chalks, and some washes, just mainly streaking downward.

Most of the hull detail (i.e. missile silo hatches, ladders, etc.) was printed on clear Avery self-adhesive label "paper" - my poor / lazy man's version of homemade decals.

Kit was a stock Typhoon. Had to add lots too it, and even had to extend the hull length.

Excellent. This will be a huge help. The more I study your pics and the pics of the large filming model to more I see needs to be done.

Thank you so much.

I need to take some time and dig into this thread for a painting tutorial. I have a Trumpeter 1/144 Seawolf I need to get off my ass and paint.

As it turns out—Typhoons never had a beaver tail

All the pics went away..replacements?

Late (very) to the party, but your model is incredible PHArchivist, I just got myself a Revell 1:400 Typhoon and was looking around for ideas on how to tackle a Red October and came across your amazing build/upgrade. Some serious work indeed.

Thank you!

Recently pulled this out of storage; beaver tail and a bow plane were "liberated" from the model, but retrieved and will be re-joined with the sub.

Thanks for the compliments!
