Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit....Lid Finished-ish.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit....Started the lid.

Thanks Stu,

Got the inside wall done and fit the flouros. Put the outer skin on and now its down to more filling and sanding and it should be ready for the hammer finish.
On that, the original to me only has the hammer finish paint on the floor of the base unit and not the rest of the self destruct but im using the hanner finish on all of it because it looks better.

This looks fantastic. Can't wait to see it finished.

I love obscure builds like this; things that are instantly recognizable by any fan of the movie, but that've never been built before.

Having said that, I also hate the fact that Hollywood never bothers to hire competent language people for translation. Boy does that french sucks.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit....Started the lid.

Are you going to be tapering the inner and outer edges like the film prop?

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit....Started the lid.

Im punching outta my division just doing the straight line version. The back of the lid will have something to resemble the original, not sure what yet, thinking about getting a small block of foam around 6 inches deep and sculpting that tapered shape. This unit is incredibly light and as i plan to make another for auction, the foam option looks good.

Apparently, Mr. Webber, we are somehow separated at birth!
Or are at least psychically connected!

Besides our love of Mad Max and The Omega Man, I have love of ALEIN/S.
And on my short list of about six prop replicas I truly wish to own, one of them is the Nostromo scuttle procedure lid!

I thought I was the only one.
I've wanted it since I saw the film back in 1979.
I even asked Bob Burns about whether he had it when I saw his collection in the 90's. (He did not)

Thanks to you and everyone who've put in the work on this.

It can be had.
I'll make it make mine.
Somehow I'll make it mine...

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit....Started the lid.

Cheers Randy, i think i can help you make a start on that. Ive dabbled a lttle in Soylent Green as well, in here somewhere.

Got the back panel fitted and finished off the sanding, undercoating and hammer finish coats. All that needs to be done to finish is some kind of raised section on the back to replicate the original, still trying to get a handle on that one. Once i can figure that out, its on to the base.

If you leave something lying around open long enough it becomes a storage unit, i think this is how it would have looked if Parker and Brett worked around it.

As much as it deserves it, i dont want this to be the most elaborate display base for Freds beer can so i need some ideas on how to finish off the back of the lid. My design has painted me in a corner and i know that the handle will have to be modified to fit in the outer case but i need an idea for something that can just be attatched to the back, the best i can think of at the minute is a 20mm thick board with a bevelled edge.

I think that's your only way out Tim! Just add the EMERGENCY ACCESS ONLY to the beveled back and call it done.
Otherwise you'll need to build a new case with beveled top and sides for the full effect.
What's the "end result" for the piece? Wall hanging? coffee table? or fully working self destruct box for your prop room? I'd start running NOW if that's the case!

Thanks for the feedback Jeff. I think thats the plan, im not skilled enough to make a 100% accurate version.

I am making the base unit as well, it will be the version when the lid is first opened but with three fake bolt heads in place and Russreps sitting in its foam snug. With the experience i gained from the lid, it wont be too difficult building the outer case, i hope. Ive given up trying to source the original clutch plates or whatever they are and will simply scratch make them from a base that can be chromed.

Just have to measure out and cut two pieces of white acrylic and cut one into the smaller buttons, the surrounding border has been identyfied as Plastruct and is still available, Joburg has kindly donated most of the latraset needed to dress the buttons, and the decals have been found.

The plan is to make the unit with a functioning lid that will light up the floros and the white acrylic buttons when it is opened. It can either be a stand alone unit or indeed even hang off the wall. Its tricky as im working off the first pic, which is the only pic i have of the entire unit but the problem with it is that they used an almost entirely different one both inside and out, in the finished movie.

Any updates Tim ?

(Love the last WIP pic you posted with the beer can and stuff displayed on it... Great wall decoration idea !)

:thumbsup

Hey Fred.
Thanks. Ive put the frame of the base unit together, just have to put the skin on. Now that i have the detonator bolt, what a great piece, congrats Russ, I can put the floor in and start measureing up all the add ons. Just finished my Three Days of the Condor File and am chest deep into some Apocalypse Now projects but will get there.

Speaking of the detonator bolt......
