Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

I think you're right. Light is going to bounce inside the arcylic until it exits at the edges and they'll glow if they are not painted or covered by styrene or something else.

And the circle cutout for the dish also counts as an edge that would glow, it might have contributed to that light leakage you had to solve.

Started the process of shortening the trench - again!

As I originaly built the model (off the erroneous shots of the original) the trench was 13mm tall. Too tall.

So I shortened it by 2mm, but it still didn't seem enough,

I then discovered that there was additional detailing in the original's trench that has since fallen off and created a trench today that is too tall compared to the condition of the model at the time of filming.

And so I'm now adding this detailing back in, and in the process creating the gaps. I was afraid that the amount I had to add back in was not enough to sufficiently create these gaps, but it turned out it was. I've added 2mm thick plastic arcs to shorten the trench and build in these gaps.

The trench now measures 9mm tall and 8mm deep.

Beginning the process

Haven't sanded smooth the plastic strips yet; imagine how cool it will look once blended in!

An angle we never really saw in Star Wars

Its huge. Looking really good. Are those pieces to go either side of the trench? (Sorry if you answered this before, its been a while since I checked in on the build)

Here's the latest...

Began sanding down the added-in strips of plastic. I intentionally left them a bit proud just to see how it looks, as per my theory, at least some areas on the original were proud of the edge of the dome.

Looks a little "toothy"; more so than I thought it would. Not sure if my gaps are too wide, or too narrowly spaced, or if its because that is all we're focusing on at the moment...

looks right to me. Once the detail panel painting is done, that will remove our attention from that area completely.....and then when the lights are on.........holy cow you won't see those teeth whatsoever. To me it matches the screen shot.

looks spot on to me
I also think it won't stick out so much once you've gone all the way around with them, and got the rest of the paint on

Also, oddly enough, now that I've taken 2mm off the total height of the trench, it still looks too tall.

Did I really have it 3mm-4mm too tall? Do I need to take another 1mm off the height!?

It looks to me like it's still a bit tall, by almost twice as much. Your "teeth" look kinda small too.

Otherwise your big ball o' death is really coming along!

The strips I am adding are actually two strips of 1mm thick styrene laminated togeter. If I went one more (making the added-on strips a total of 3mm) it would shorten the height by one more mm plus make the gaps that much larger/deeper.

But...

Adding in one more strip to accomplish this may not offer the ROI necessary to invest the time, plus aligning the third strip with the existing gaps would be a trick, and may screw up the gaps a bit.

I think I'll go wth the gaps as is. If the height of the trench still bugs me, I may add more strips to the bottom dome. And in doing that, at least it will balance out the width of the blank "equator bands".

Looking at this shot more closely...

...I think you've pretty much got it. I was miss seeing the trench width, but the right edge of the pic shows it to be wider than I thought. And the shadows play tricks too.

Keep it as is :thumbsup

You have it I wouldn't cut another miniscule amount, it looks perfect to me!! Unless your going to get your hands on the original filming miniature with a pair of calipers, it's just about there and as close as it can be from looking at reference photos!!:thumbsup

Regards,
Michael

And even then, it wouldn't help, since the trench today is much wider than it was during filming...

I probably will keep it as is, but you do have a good eye - I think I'm off by .5mm to 1mm, but not enough to really go in and further adjust. You're totally correct about shadows, the play tricks all the time. The illusions created when working on a sphere are diabolical!
