Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

Alright I'm just about to sand this section clean and start all over. Something's bugging me about it!

Thanks, JD...

And I'm intentionally not mentioning it so as not to pre-dispose you all into seeing what I am.

I want to see if you all do notice what is bothering me.

And its weird, at times I'll scrutinize this area and it looks fine; then I'll look again and it will glare at me.

Are you bothered by those couple of horizontal pencil lines that are not parallel to the trench (and all the other pencil lines??)

Took me some time to decide if it was simply an illusion or not. I think it's not but man, not sure if I would "fix" any of it.

Maybe not so much the horizontal...

I'm not seeing anything that bothers me with any vertical lines in these images... Just thought the block of horizontal lines in the lower right of the large rectangle just to the right of the long silver stripe looked maybe, just maybe a bit "off."

I'm sure you'll get other opinions on this. Really, it's awesome as is, but can understand how you want to get it as close to perfect as you can.

I'm a perfectionist and I don't see anything wrong with it. Although, seeing it in person might be different.
I think it's perfect the way it is and does not deserve the delay of finishing it.
So, let's keep going and finish this thing!:love:thumbsup

I have a question. (not related to what you were just commenting on).

I am not sure how the studio model was but is there a reason the whole
top left sides speckeled panels are so much darker then the rest of the model?

Is that how it was or am I just seeing a lighting effect. The bottom and front areas around the dish seem so much lighter than the upper top/side
section. I'm just curious.

Either way, this is one KILLER looking model and I doubt anyone could top it. I've been following this project since you started.

Definitly an awesome job. :thumbsup

Here's what's knawing away at me - the vertical lines lean to the right by at least a degree.

They're not perfectly perpindicular to the equator band. Minute, granted - But I think the related angles are like 89 degrees and 91 degrees. But now I'm obsessed with it.

And the weirdest thing (which doesn't make any sense to me at all) is that while working on it with my contact lenses in, they seem - not perfect - but barely off at all.

Later in the evening, with glasses on (and after having stepped away from the project for an hour or two), I come back and they seem WAY off.

Nonsensical, I know...

Rob,

You ruined it. It is of no use for you anymore.

Give it to me.

Move along.

:angel

Mate, this build is becoming better and better every time I check this thread. You say one (1!) degree is way off? Nobody can see it in the pictures at all. Besides, I always thought small imperfections make a prop even more authentic....

Anyway, your decision.

Cheers,
Falk

I took the plunge. The cityscape just to the left of the dish is being redone.

I had to spray the light grey area just left of the dish anyway (due to a crude pencil line cirlcing the dish I applied before I got my mechanical pencils) so I figured I'd do this one section.

It is a draw to the eye, since it is at the focal point of the model.

Plus, since I have photos of thelines I did, I not longer have to scrutinize poor reference to redo the lines. They shoud take 1/3 the time.

Alright I'm just about to sand this section clean and start all over. Something's bugging me about it!

You are a brave man. I'm sure it will look even better if that's possible. Post pictures when you get a chance.

Another advantage in redoing this is that I used the .5mm pencil when I should have used the .3mm...

A .2mm difference doesn't sound like much, until you consider I have about 15 vertical lines.

So that is the equivalent of an extra 3mm wide band of lead. That much extra lead really darkens the area.

I am sure this is going to look better, even though I thought it looked fine before:). I haven't checked in on this for awhile and thank goodness as I actually felt pretty good about the stuff I have been doing.:rolleyes How many of those can you do before you are cross-eyed? Have you tried laying out some stuff in Ai? Humbly forgive if you already did that, just trying to add more than my usual -"you are awesome". Just thinking if one could see how many x-mm lines fit into a x-mm space might help some. To allow for the shape would be problematic I am sure.

What a great project. Do you have a spot for it when done? I think I can squeeze it in my tiny HT if you need me to. "R2.Move over,I need some room here.":love It would be cool if before you send it you rig it to play "I Will Survive" when it lights up. Seriously, mindbogling in its awesomeness!

Well, got it repainted and re-speckled. Got just about perfect match with the speckling, so no problems there.

Also, was able to make more accurate the fine grey stripes in that area.

Still had to make some minor adjustments by hand-speckling with the pen.

And while I AM happier, its not like "Oh baby - that's it!!" Its better, but mildly so, and I'm still not certain its perfect. But, moving on...

Just started in on the pencil lines. Weird - the pencils aren't getting any traction. I'm thinking it may have to do with not-fully-cured paint.

Finally, crazy as it seems, my glasses DO seem to bend the light and make the lines tilt right. Bizzarre, I know. I tried to snap a pic to show it.

Any optometrists in the house?

um... do you have an astigmatism? if so... your lenses are supposed to do that.
idk... i'm a lab tech at an optical lab so I'm kinda just guessing that's what it sounds like.

DUDE!... your work blows me away the level of detail your putting into this and the amount of accuracy is really REALLY impressive.

I've been lurking here for a while now but I had to say

YOU ARE COOL!!! :eek

P.S. First post! :lol
