Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

This is my Fav RPF build of all in 2009 ...AND now - 2010!!!
(my second fav is the DSII attack diorama - if you haven't seen it - Do So!)

I only wish I lived nearer Bob's DS build so I could beg to scratch a few dozen windows.
Go get em Bob & Co.!

Thanks again, guys.

Mikel, I decided not to redo that one area. Different color value or not, I like it as is, and it is some of my best work on the model.

Started my first lines on the antarctic circle - first lines, and first screw-ups! Work in this region is physically the most awkward and difficult. There is a certain degree of sloppiness here, but there is also some on the original, so I can live with it. And conveniently, the higher up you go (and the easier it gets) the more the eye sees. The really difficult places to work on are the hardest to view.

Anyway, the lines - as presumed - really add a level of dimension to the beast.

Holy Crap man!!!! Those pencil lines are stunning. That literally makes this my official favorite prop ever made on the RPF my friend!!!!! You are kicking major butt with this thing. Would you sell it for one meeeellion american dollars???? HMMMMM?????? Don't blame ya for saving the dish for last. It's the end all focal point of the whole shebang!!!

Dave :)

Dave have you ever messed around with the brightness settings on the material you shared my way?

The nearly completly black area left of the dish - after brightened up - shows TONS of lines you really can't even see in hi-res images of the origninal model today. MUCH of the original lead markings have now faded.

Which of course makes my job that much more challenging!

I agree. Like we talked about several times. Unless you had physical access to the real DS back before the paint faded over time and were able to take a paint chip from it, you will never find the perfect color.

I think it looks great and even better than the real DS in it's current state.

Yes I did Rob and was blown away by the details in that photo. Glad its helping......er uh........making you crazy.......he he.

Grant: "Ralph - you done with that thing yet!?"

Ralph: "Nope...!"

Grant: "Well why the **** not!?"

Ralph: "Because... Some moron wanted all these ****in' LINES drawn all over it...!"

Grant: "*****... :rolleyes How far are you...?"

Ralph: "Bottom half done; part way into the upper half..."

Grant: "George is up my ass like a two dollar wh*re - forget the friggin' lines and just finish the ****er...!"

Ralph: "Ho-kay-aaay... You know, some time, some idiot is gonna try to recreate this damn thing in his garage, and will thank you for that decision right there!"

Grant: "Yeah - whatever. Just get it done."

Plugging away at the lines. Pretty much finished the antarctic circle and the first band up from it. Glad to be done - they are the hardest, and will most likely end up being the least perfect.

Anyway, here's what I have so far. Also note that I've painted out some of the larger dots, increasing the granularity, or rather, making it more fine. Though I may have to go farther with this.

And BANG, suddenly it's the Death Star! Not that it sucked beforehand, but wow, that's the stage that just makes it something special, eh? Your work is great.

So now that it is almost finished I bet you think you can indulge in your fantasies of one day ruling the galaxy, if not just your suburb at the very least. Well, I'm planning on destroying it before it can become fully operational.

WOW! My jaw hit the floor on that second photo. I can't express how impressive the whole thing is and your dedication to detail!

Thanks guys - keep in mind the second and fourth photos (the more complete pics) are of the original; posted so you can compare.

lol - you're absolutely right.
....I can't believe my star wars knowledge failed me....:lol
So now in looking at them it looks like your technique matches the final result perfectly! I can't wait to see more!
