Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

Looking at this photo is looks to me that there are very thin strips of some material (styrene?)

The ony distinguishable "raised" strips are the "silver tape strips" Rob has figure out that car pinstriping vinyl tape looks perfect and I agree.

Good eye though.

Yeah that area proposed as a lost strip of styrene is clearly silver tape. This model creates TONS of visual illusions. Any solid black line I can assure is marker or pencil. Also, bear in mind that shot was just a sample to show how busy that area is.

Off to paining...!

Ok, I knew you guys had it under control, lol. It's a credit to the original builders that the thing gives off the illusions that it does as far as texturing goes. Very tough to do on a smooth round ball, lol.

Here's something to gander at while I upload the rest...

This section is CRAZY, and a precursor to what comes next...

I'd love to have that as a lighting feature hanging from the cathedral ceiling in my living room!:love:thumbsup
Great work!:cool:thumbsup

Here is a comparison of the granularity between what I did on the lower dome a week ago (second pic), versus what I did today. Brad was dead on in that the lower dome has some spots that are too big, making the grain too coarse.

The key is intentionally trying to go as fine as I can.

The section I did today - on the original - is the lightest secion on the model. So I intentionally focused on going with a light touch, with a finer spritz. The result - at least to my eye - is the closest I've come yet to the original.

I wish I could just redo what I've done already. But I can finesse the other areas. I will just spend some time each work session hand painting out the largest dots, the adding back in much finer black dots. Over time, this should slowly increase the degree of granularity, making it appear more fine.

By the way, the "Wilson Hair" (you figure it out!) above the dish is on the agenda to be lightened, so no comments from the peanut gallery required! ;)

This shot was taken with flash, and the overhead lights out. You can sure tell why they added detail painting to the dish (later on my agenda).
