Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

I agree witih Micdavis, you need to finish it up, then stand back and tweak what you want to tweak. You may find that the pencil lines and dull coat will make you quite happy without repainting speckles all over the place.

Looks awesome! The lines will really make it pop! It looks fantastic, and the lines will add that "organized" look to the speckle, and make it look "constructed". Its the same priciple as a wash and dry brushing. It just makes the model look "real". I think that the same will happen once you break out the mechanical pencil and draw a few lines.

It also looks like you've perfected the speckle technique. The latest areas look more like the original then the fisrt ones... not that the first ones were bad... mind you. This build is in the stretch run and its been a true pleasure to watch unfold. Its funny how this "seems" to be a simple build but turned out to be a lot more complicated then anyone would have thought - you included I'm sure...

When it does get to be time for the pencil make sure you use a harder graphite. I was obsessing over the size of the panels on my training remote and decided to outline them with pencil to check the size against the reference. The experiment was ruined as mine looked more like a bold black border because of the too-soft graphite. Graphite comes in a range densities, and I think I was using a higher numbered B in my pencil. I'm going to be grabbing up some in the H end of the range this week, but if I had to guess its probably going to be 6H. The harder the graphite the more 'silver' it will appear on the surface.

EDIT: Has it been said already?

Nice work on this build! I must say that i have always wanted one of these of my own! This has given me some motivation to start my own project!

Thanks man!

Not much to show for the weekend.

Soccer and family fall afternoon adventures (pumpkin patch Saturday, apple orchards Sunday) kept me from getting paint on this section. Should be able to splatter it tomorrow or Tuesday.

Reference in this area is tough. Even with a staright on hi-res shot of the first row, it still appears on the original as a chaotic mess. So I sort of "winged it".

Here's a sample. See how it is notably more difficult to make out the blank strips. Just a jumble going on in there...

Aside from (literally) a few masked off portions it looks like most of the structure comes from the pencil lines. It looks like they used a heavy pencil and a light one that is barely visible. In looking at all of the strips that my eye is interpreting as a masked off area there are still dots and speckles in that area.

I really think its subtle vertical and horizontal pencil lines giving the illusion of this massive masking job.

Looking at this photo is looks to me that there are very thin strips of some material (styrene?) in some areas that are speckled over and some of the pencil lines are actually shadowing from the strips. You can make out what looks like the top of each strip right below the scribe line on the top left. In fact on the far left you can see where one of the strips came off showing the base coat under. Maybe it's just this photo. I know you have much more reference material but this photo does indeed look that way to me.
