Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

Awesome. 'smack' 'smack' Seriously, though, you'll have to be the decider if something is off or not. We have to work through the distortion.

It looks dead on.

It's hard to tell for sure in photos, but it looks like you may have some uneven tape overlap in the circled areas. Other than that, it's looking beautiful.

Man, I so want to make one of these. I hope you're writing all this down somewhere because I'm expecting a book to be published on how to make your own Death Star.

Thanks, A... I'll take a closer look at those areas tonight. I do have points where a couple pieces of tape join and overlap, so I'll need to be careful there.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think the main thing I'm looking for is if anything just "pops" as being off. Not so much mathematical or geometric perfection, but good to the eye (likely how most filming models are done). So Fred, when you bring the laser-level, you can check my work, but for now I'll move forward! ;) Seriously though, good idea! :thumbsup

Got more taping to do this afternoon - the left half of the third row down, plus the last row. Not sure if I'll get paint on it tonight or not, as I won't be able to get at it until 4:30 or so (usually get home and working on it by 3:00 or 3:30, but son has a dentist appointment).

This half of the lower dome is a lot of work. Bigger and more complicated than the upper dome portion I've already completed. The other side of the lower dome won't be any easier, and the left half of the upper dome will be even more difficult.

Left lower will be approached much like I'm doing the right lower. Just knock it out with a few days of taping, but more or less do it in one shot. Left upper dome will be split up a bit. The area around the dish is much lighter, and I'll do that first. Then take a break, and move on to the rest.

Adding up the remaining stips I need, it looks like less than 10 total. 2-4 in the third row, and about the same number in the 4th row. I should be able to knock that out pretty quick, and maybe get some paint on the beast tonight.

And I need to widen out that broad stip in the first row all the way to the right - needs another 2mm-3mm. Easy to do.

In the upper left of this picture there are two medium width masked strips side by side and a skinny strip between them.
That strip appears to extend beyond the horizontal masking line that most of the panels stop at.
Yours does not appear to extend as I see you have made other similar panels.

Also in the panel directly to the left of the previously described area, there is a skinny masked strip in the middle of the panel coming up from the bottom. I believe on your model that needs to be maybe 2mm longer or so. On the real model it looks like it comes almost half way up the panel.

Thats my construtive critiscm for the day.:)

This I did intentionally. I figured for such a small area, it'd be easier to go back in later and hand-draw the 1mm - 2mm extension, as opposed to futzing with masking. On the other hand, how tough could it be just to cut our a 2mm square of tape?

Good eye. Actual more like 4mm - 5mm. Easy fix; will do.

Referring to the arrows from left to right:

1. This strip looks like it bends to the right at about the point where the arrow is.
2. Same here, to a lesser extent.
3. This box looks like it might have a bit too much of this \ / going on (I realize some should be there due to curvature.) Perhaps an issue with the strip on the right only.

Man, this is something else!

I see what you mean, Jay. I'll take a closer look today.

The red arrows are out. :lol

More power to you... masking that precise from reference has got to be difficult. The spacing between the painted panels must look different in every shot. :wacko

Ok...Since I'm not at home, I have no way to circle the areas that I'm referring to...So I'll try to be specific.

In the DS pic below, the upper middle is a larger grey area, with 2 very thin strips that extend down from it into the next row.

To my eye, the thin strips on the original are just to the right of center when compared to the larger area above it.

However, in the masked off pic you posted, they appear to be extending down at almost dead center to the larger area.

Does that make sense?

If you shift them over a tad to the right, you will also want to bring the thin strip from the third row down over to the right as well...Which may warrant a little more adjusting on other things...Which could very well drive you completely nuts.

Of course these are very minimal things, and I might just be nitpicking...But it's really the only thing that stood out to me. :)

I've been following this project for some time and think it's absolutely amazing. GREAT work on everything you've done Rob.

Hope that helps,
Jason

I'm a little worried about the consitancy of the speckle and the big black dots...

Just being honest Rob,

Brad
