Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

You think this looks great in pictures. Wait until you see it in person.

Rob graciously allowed a few of us to come by and peak at the DS today.

AMAZING!!!!

Good to meet you today Mike and yes it does look even more amazing in person!

Five Star Wars nerds in ONE garage gawking at a big grey ball... :rolleyes

And believe it or not no one called the Geek Police - my neigbors must be getting used to me!

We had a good time. Mike, and Mike, BrianM and Brad all dropped by to check out the beast. Is always comforting and fun to get together with like-minded folk (nice to know I'm not the only one!)...

Of course, I had to point out all my flaws, while the gentlemen graciously stroked my ego (EGO - I said ego!).

Fired up the lights on the inside for a tease on how it (may) look in a few years, when my kids graduate and I finish the mother !&%$#.

Seriously, showing off may or may not be what it is ALL about, but it IS a big part of what we do. I'd probably still dig this **** in a vacuum, but it would not be as rewarding. The opportunity to share with friends is always welcome.

:cheers to all... Thanks for coming by. I'll have cold beer next time.

I'm jealous I didn't get to join the party!!! Some day it's on my list to come to you and see this beastie in person. I'd rather see this one than Gus' original.........because yours will look closer to the original filming model......it won't be smudged and beat up etc...... I sound insane.....LOL.

Dave :)

Both Seattle and Los Angeles/SoCal are worther vacation destinations. Consider doing both in a single trip. If you're in LA for a week or so, you could pop up to Seattle either in a one day shot, or a two-day stay over, and be in and out for $200 - $400.

Got the mechanical pencils and harder leads today. Took an HOUR to get three pencils loaded. :rolleyes

Anyway, about to do some tests...

0.3mm is the way to go...

Again, to summarize, these pencils feature 0.3mm, 0.5mm, 0.7mm, and 0.9mm diamter leads - the diameter is specific to the pencil (a pencil accommodates only one diameter).

The range of hardness is HB, 2H, 3H, 4H, 5H, and 6H. The darker, the lighter the line.

I've been using a 0.5mm, 2H lead.

Greater hardnesses (4H and 6H), even at 0.5mm barely show. So anything above 3H or 4H at 0.3mm would be practically invisible.

But I tried a 0.3mm HB (softest in the "Hard" range), and I like it much better than the .05mm 2H that I've been using.

The 0.3mm HB is finer but softer (so darker) than the 0.5mm 2H, but the overall impression of the line is slightly less bold than what I've been using, which contributes to the scale effect.

Whenever I use pencil over paint I find I get a nice dark line when I can feel it cutting into the paint like fine sandpaper. BUT eventually reach a point where my line scrapes through the paint and feels smooth. When it gets this far the line looks way too light. Just one more thing to worry about... sorry I don't even know what to tell you.

And don't forget to sneak your initials in there somewhere.

amazing. can't phrase it any better than that.

Thanks!

Here's the latest - about half done with the lines on the lower dome... You can clearly see in this image the effect the lines have on darkening the overall appearance.

Thanks lee - I need the encouragement. The next half of the lower dome is even more complex.

Agreed! Looks fantastic Rob! I am curious where you are going to display it.

What you see is what you get - the shop is also my overflow display room, and its too big for the house.
