Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

By the way...

Anybody notice that I am now in my third year on this project!

Don't worry Rob... that's about 10 years I cut the domes for my DS (35 cm wide domes ! :lol) and I guess they will lay in my shop for another decade.

3 years, but we're still here to follow your work !! And we enjoy it ! :)

Even in these shots of the original, you can see the blocks in the lower dome are notably darker...

Almost makes me go back to wondering if this area was under coated (remember that debate!?)...

Rob, FWIW, it looks undercoated to me. But I think you should stick to your current approach, or everyone here (including you) might lose their minds.

I can't remember the debate but it almost looks like the top was exposed to the sun and has faded compared to the bottom. Sorry if this is a rehash of past discussions.

That could be... We do know for a fact that the top has lost all its lines, where the bottom has not.

On the other hand, there is a visible difference in the granularity, top versus bottom.

OK I spent about twice as much time on the section on the left, and still doesn't look much different...

Here's another look...

Retouched on left (I added a couple vertical lines)..........................................................Previous on the right

Ludicrously cool. I don't know what else to say, I'm continually amazed at the amount of work that has gone into this project and given the perfectionist approach you've taken, it's obvious that barring catastrophy it's gonna look spectacular when it's finished.

I can't wait for the next update! :thumbsup

That compliment makes me grin! Haven't heard it put quite that way! Thanks much for the kind words!

OK After reading all 88 pages of this monster it has inspired me to build the Death Star II and no I'm not kidding I only have one problem keeping me from starting the behemoth well two things. First where can I get the domes from? Second after looking at several pictures of the DS II it looks like the guts of the station that you can see on the outside as slides of plexiglass that have been detailed does that sound right or does someone know what they used for the major details on the DS II.

Rob may be able to point you in the right direction for the plexi-spheres. They cost about $1500-$2000. But the DS2 model was bigger than the original DS.

The interior of the DS2 was etched brass.

So be it etched brass but I'll have it the same size as the DS 1. After being amazed by this thread I now want to build the DS II.

Retouched another area, to increase the granularity and darken it. This time I think I suceeded. Used a new pen - may have helped.

Can you tell a difference?
