Building the 8' Star Destroyer (superstructures done)

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Looking at the top most photo I thought this parts combo looked odd to be on a star destroyer...but then the pic of it on the actual model...what a bizarre combination of parts!

Very cool!

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

this is quite the impressive piece. I wonder what your going to do when it's completed. You know that let down after something is completed. Wow , i've just created this incredible , screen accurate 8' Star Destroyer....hummmm..now what. I can see your relatives coming over and they have that agreeable conversation with you and behind the screens they are saying how crazy you where to waste the money.
We've all been there.....that is what makes us special.

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Thanks guys ! Yeah that's a cool assembly I think :)
Hehe yeah Scott, that's why I posted a pic of the assembly on the actual model because it's not an area we use to see !

You're right propologist !
That's even worse because I dont show my models ! I mean only 2 guys (Kurt, Guy) saw some of my models in person (besides my GF and parents of course :p). I like to build for myself and I just enjoy the building and research process...
Anyway a guy who own a museum (about the SFX) asked me if I was OK to put my models in display for some time, I could say yes !

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

:eek ... tounge falls to floor! You are setting a whole new level of accuracy with this one... Kepp up the great work!

Steve

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

This is just an amazing amount of work you're doing Julien.

However, on the twisted side of the conversation,.... I would like to see the size of the "Coffee Table" that you're going to display this build on, you may have to raise the Television to the ceiling so that you can still watch the game with the boys over a few beer :lol

Keep up the top notch craftsmanship, you sure are setting the bar awfully high on this one! :eek

Yeha I understand that's an incredible piece. I think you could sell a book with images that arrow out every part from a kit. I would buy one just for future projects when I'm in the old star wars fan home .

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

That's a great challenge~! Julien

I'm REALLY surprising from your progress...(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

thanks Eric.

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Julien, i've said it before mate but seeing your work in the flesh was just mind blowing. Sorry I've not sent the T shirts yet, I do have them but I keep getting asked to work for people & its taken me away from home again. I promise I will send them but it may be in the new year. I just wrapped up with my usual band tonight, last show of the year, thank FU**

Check out a band called Everything Everything on youtube mate, they're local to me & I'm making it my mission to be employed by them before March, with a bit of luck.

Have you found your new place or it is still at the decision stage, Count me in if you have a house warming.

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Your'e a modelling machine J, that fabricated section is just outstanding, should be done , in what, 2 years lol?.
Stu:lol

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

I gonna move (with my fiancée :p) to a new bigger house !
To quote my wife, "I will always know where your are".

Congrads Julian, I'm sure your going to need an even bigger house(in time, to bad you couldn't get a wing of Versailles, that might have enough space for your builds:lol).

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Thanks Steve, Jay, Propologist, Eric, Guy, Stu and Max :)

Jay, it will stay in my hobby room when not in display at the museum !
But I won a battle against my GF, she always told me she didnt want any of my models in the living room, then I said I would like to put some posters, she went crazy and told me "models OK but no posters" ! :love

Propologist, I dont plan to write this kind of book, I dont want any problem with LucasFilm !

Eric, I was looking your blog 4 days ago and got plenty of inspiration to build my hull frame ! Did you cut the plexi by yourself ?

Guy, dont worry for the T-shirts, your job first ! I dont know everything everything, cant find anything on youtube ? We went to Biffy Clyro's show last week and we thought that would be cool if you were working for them ! Not a big band thought :( I dont know if they earn any money by touring in France...

Stu, once the hull and building frames are built it shouldnt take more than 6 months to complete... It depends of my job schedule of course !

Hehe Max, mine says about the same "When you're building your ***** models I know you're not with other girls" ! :lol

I would love to own the mirror room, what a nice place to display your models ! They did an exhibit of an american artist last year in this room, Jeff Koons. Was great !

Today I built quickly that :

I also added the last details on both sides of the neck... More pics tomorrow ! :)

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

Thank you Kevin !

Yesterday I received my kit which had the kind of radiators part on the left side of the neck. I cut them, unfortunatly (I knew that), my 3 styrene plates were 1 mm too high and the spacing between them was 1 mm instead of 0.5mm. Doesnt sound huge, but when you add them all, that's makes almost 5 mm... So I stripped off the plates and re did the plating job... My first plates were also too long but with new ref pics Ive been able to get them perfectly proportionned and scaled.

On the other side, I also glued the F1 radiator parts, here again my styrene plate was a bit too high. This time, I just cut a strip.

I sprayed primer, that's quite hard because where I paint it's very cold, but I was able to get a decent result with the use of an hairdryer.

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer

I think this takes the cake as the most ambitious studio-scale build ever! Wow! Very inspiring. :D
