Broken Tusk - Small Update, Pg 5, Post 105

Thanks Brad. I'm no Usurper, but I'm 90% happy with the way it turned out. The first cast is done, but I took it out a tid bit too early. Everything is fine, just the one spot around the rim isn't cured yet. It is a bit big and goes over my head in once piece. I did 2 pours and the thickness turned out perfect. I have just enough latex to do one more. On to building the armature for my next sculpt....P1 skull

Thanks for looking!

Not much of an update, but wanted to share the latest sculpt for my Broken Tusk suit build....and that sculpt is will be his greatest trophies...the P1 skull.

I'm not particularly crazy about the SS version. Don't get me wrong, it's a great piece, has great details in it...but there are some things that I dislike about it. The first one is the dread line, I think it's a bit too low; the dreads holes seem to point backwards; and the rear of the skull seems flat.

I chose Usurper's P1 Gen. 2 mask as the P1 I wanted to try and sculpt a skull for. I really like his work and his gen 2 P1 mask is amazing. I'm trying to follow it the best I can and here is where I'm at so far [my apologies if it's hard to see the detail due to the clay being marblized...but I couldn't wait to tackle the sculpt and put off mixing the clays together.

Just like Usurper's Gen 2 P1 mask, I'm going to make the mandibles closed. I'm going to make a stand for it, but may just make a stand that the skull can sit on. I'm not too keen on notching out a square plug for it-to me it seems like it would take away from the sculpt.

I'm still up in the air about how to mold it. I want to make it a solid piece like the SS version [no gaping hole at the bottom like the recasts]. I was thinking of a big block mold, but I think that would mean I would have to make the skull one solid piece, which may make it a bit heavy.

I'll need to work on the molding and the stand later.

After this, might do a backplate...unsure if sculpting it or just making on from pieces I find around the house.

Thanks for looking and comments are always welcome!

Dude you are really emerging as a great sculptor! Your workk is great, has its own style for sure. I keep saying it but it never gets old, you will SERIOUSLY be a beast when you suit up for the first time!! BEAST!

Keep going doug.....Perhaps you can make the trek down with us for DC or any other con, your more than welcome to stay here, and the clan grows........

Thanks for the compliment guys, greatly appreciated! Still a lot to do, but I wont be able to mold or cast anything for a few months. After I get the skulls cast up, I'm going to go for the "rotted skull" look and try and make it look like the skulls were pulled from the head not too long ago. Still have scars and some miscl. stuff to add and touch up on the skin. I'm going to try and practice air brushing in the next few days.

Thanks again!

I did more work on my P1 Skull and thought I was done.....wrongo. I placed the mandibles into location as well as the jaw, and it didn't look right to me. Don't know what it is, but it just doesn't look right. I think the lower mandibles might be a bit too long as well.

I'm still stuck on molding it, but it looks like I might do a two part block mold. I want to make it that there isn't any holes to the inside, but I don't want to make it one solid resin piece either.

Here's my theory.....I'll cut out a 1" hole in the mold to pour the resin and then make a plug to fit the hole. I'll try to slush cast it [not sure if it will work or not] without going over the plug hole. After I do a few pours and I think the thickness is decent, I'll pout a good amount in, place the plug in, and have the resin cure over the plug.

^
Just my theory and not sure if it will work...your thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Onto the pics:

I understand that with tissue and skin added, it will take up some of the space and gaps. But, something does look a bit off though...like the jaw and lower mandibles are a bit too big for it.

I don't have as much detail as the SS version, but to me I looked at the human skull and I don't see an extensive amount of detail in it.

Again, sorry for the mixed clay making it hard to see. I'll probably mold and cast the main skull, then make sure everything else lines up/final adjustments before molding any other parts.

Thanks for looking and comments are always welcome and appreciated.

I finally started painting!

I've had/have a lot of help from NeoKazama and Predator666thepain666. I've also had a lot of help on how to airbrush from a person called "airbrush tutor" on YouTube. I'm using a Iwata Eclipse HP-CS airbrush and fw and liquitex inks. I'm a noob at painting, but having a blast at it.

I tried to paint up a hand, but ultimately failed and am going to practice more on the spair hand I have. I did paint up the Berzerker Boots, Mr. Black neck ring, and Berzerker Belt. The colors I used are burnt umber and black. After I painted it, I realized that perhaps I should have used a little dark green [hunter green perhaps] to break it up and try and built a dirty/grime look and feel to it. The boots, I went for a leather look instead of the armor look [in my mind, it's a kevlar type of material wrapped in leather---at least that made me feel better on not getting it to look like armor, and instead getting it to look like leather]. I still have a lot to learn, but I'm having a blast at it. Athough I can see areas that I would have liked to do better, but so far I'm happy with how it turned out.

As for the skull. I've stopped working on it for now and will go back to add the detail in areas and the teeth. Since the P2 elder is basically a P1 with slight lower mandible adjustments, I'm going to made P2 Elder attachments so that I can do a P2 Elder Trophy Skull as well.

Thanks for looking and comments are always welcome!

Not really an update, but wanted to gather your thoughts and opinions.

I took another shot at the paint scheme and it's not really what I'm going for. I can see areas that I really need improvement, but I'm still learning. I was thinking that "if" I keep this paint scheme, about going over it again and perhaps adding in some black spots like in a P1. Overall my suit is a bad blood and I am going for a different look in a paint scheme, just not sure if I'm sold on this.

Here is the paint scheme I'm trying go after. http://www.modelzone.com/mangrasshopper/index.php?level=album&id=270

Here's where I'm at:

In doing the P1 Skull, I'm going to eventually make P2 Elder attachments...but I'm not sure if I want to take the route of more detail like the SideShow P1 Skull or do less detail like in a human skull. I want to go for a realistic look, but even looking at animal skulls, there isn't an extreme amount of find detail.

I know the sculpt is hard to see due to the marble clay, but I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts.

Looking at your inspiration pics, I'm seeing the darker color being a dried-blood red, with the middle being a darker orange. Also, the pale body color wraps around the fingers and extends to the wrist. The only real brown I'm seeing is at the base of the nail:

Yea, I'm looking at different ink colors. I need to pick up some for the mouth anyway so I'll pick up some other colors and try it out.

Although the look I ended up with seems somewhat like that of the Predators concept art. It looks like the inspiration for the original paint up was from P2.

http://www.thehunter...rs-concept-art/

I ended up with something different, but after looking at it for a while...I'm actually thinking that it's not all that bad. I'm wouldn't be finished with the hand. The nails still bother me, would have to do some detailing and a maybe a spot pattern.

I'm on my third airbrushing attempt on the right P2 hand. I think I'm getting closer and overall I'm happier with this rendition then my previous one. I noted the measurements used to get each color of ink. I think I'm getting better at it, but still have a long way to go.

In the above pic between the four stripes of red, I think I need to pull the red up further. It might just be me, but it also seems like it's missing something too.

Overall I think I'm doing good on the horn sticking out of the side of the wrist and the glove. :D

I've had help with airbrushing technique from:

Thanks for viewing and comments are greatly appreciated.

Doug it looks cool mate.. well done on the paint on the hand.. one thing i learned. sometimes paint ups do feel like they are missing something.. but once you hit them with the clear coat all the details and colours start to come through and they settle ..

You could harden the outer edge by hand painting the blood red portion of the pattern or maybe do a small darker red outline. Just an idea but it's looking really good so far.

Nice paint up! (y) The only thing I can think of that might bring it all together is, maybe add some black spots to the back of the hand and the fingers. Would really help further blend your already great paint job. The contrast can make the red "pop" a little more. For the spots use a super low flow and do some little quick "pssts" (half a second sprays). Keep them pics coming bro!

hey Doug, not sure if you have done it yet or not, im playing a lot of catch up on some threads.

but as to the problem with casting your pred skull. you could always make the pour spout be the foramen magnum. the hole in the bottom of the skull where the spinal cord enters. that hole is supposed to be there. just some food for thought.

ps. everything else is looking really good man!
