Brian's Pred Suit... Updated Fanboy Expo Pics On Last Page.

Pick away Sean, but don't take too much...not much left  :D.  I'm happy to help any way I can.

Well I'm kind of struggling with the layering on of colours. I plan to use FW inks as I was not pleased with Liquitex and though I am happy with the paint job on my feet , I know it could be a lot better. Will expect a 3000 word essay on this, on my desk by tomorrow...lol

Cheers

Or, how about I just pop on over and show you in person  :D!  I'll try and make it a point to get more pics while I'm painting the legs, and describe how I do it.  I am no pro, I just kinda "went with it", and did a little bit at a time.  I spent allot of time just looking at the mask and suit, trying to figure out how IT wanted to be painted.  Each time I pick up the AB I feel a little more confident, and things go a little more smoothly.  Whoever said practice makes perfect really knew what they were talking about!

Take me with you Brian so I can learn from both of you.  :D It is good to see some more pictures. The suit is looking very good. These things are such a challenge to put together and you are doing a great job. Keep up the excellent work and get those legs done....

Steve

Yeah, I guess it's a little over due.   I've got the legs back on the dummy, and have finished the thigh armor.  I'll try and get some pics tonight.  I'm in the process of figuring out the shin/calf armor as we speak, haven't decided on what material to make them out of.  I really don't think foam is going to hold up, and am trying to avoid getting out the fiberglass...any suggestions?  Once those are done, it's simply a matter of painting up the legs and feet, and adding the netting, and it will be done.  I've been home with the kids over Christmas break, so not allot of time to work on it, but they wen back today so I'm hoping to get going and get it done very soon.  Thanks for the reminder on this once again Steve!

Brian

Yeah...I am still thinking on that one as well. I have contemplated using the blue foam sleeping pads you can get at Walmart to make armor or at least the shin guards and paint latex all over it. I will either do something like that or cast them but i would prefer them to be somewhat flexible. Sounds like you are so close man.

Steve

I've got a camping mat, and thought about using it, but I'm worried about the paint chipping/cracking from rubbing or flexing.  So far, that has been the biggest problem I've run into with the foam armor;  the cracking from flexing.  I'm also considering sintra, but I'm out of large pieces, and don't have a good local source for it.  I guess I could always resin coat the foam to stiffen it up.  I'm gonna play with a few ideas and see how things turn out.  I'll try and get pics of the process when I come up with something workable.

Brian

Let me know because I was also considering the Sintra as well for an option. Still undecided myself...haven't you already used some for what you have made so far? What thickness did you go with?

Steve

So, as promised, here's the thigh armor I've recently finished.  Small update and not very thrilling pics, but at least it's something.  I spent some time cleaning up the shop, so no more excuses...

Looks fabulous! Did the texture in them come from the paint or did you put that into the, I assume Sintra? before painting? Thanks for the update. They turned out really well!

Steve

Thanks Steve. Actually, it's foam over sintra, and the texture was in the foam. I paint everything with sponges, and that helps with the texture too. If spent most of the morning trying to figure out the calf/shin armor with little success. It's hard to get all the compound curves and still have the ability to slip it over your foot. I'll keep at it, as I'm getting excited to see this done. More to come...

Glad your excitement is building to get this finished. The sponge painting looks great. I will have to do the same. I guess those compound curves would be a bit tricky....

The pieces that I was dreading the most are done!  :D I finally have the shin/calf armor done, which means that ALL my armor is complete!  As with most of the other pieces, they're made from EVA foam, sintra, and foamies (for details).  I'm very happy with the way they turned out, and they fit better than I could have hoped.  I have also installed the boots into the feat, and added a little foam, giving me an extra 2 1/2" of lift.  Sorry no pics of them, that's another update.  I'm at the point where all that needs to be done is paint the leg skins and feet, and I'll be COMPLETE.  The end is so close I can taste it!  Went to the art store today to get some more white FW ink, and wouldn't ya know it, they're out until Wednesday #@&*%!!!  That's what's holding me up at the moment, or the paint would be finished tomorrow.  Anyway, hope you all enjoy the pics, ans as always, all comments welcome and appreciated!  Thanks for looking  :)

Brian

Hey Brian....it looks like they turned out great! I wish I was at the stage you are at with a suit build. Can't wait to see the boots as well. Holw about a full shot of the whole suit and the boots now? Of course you could always get into it first which would be even better!  :p  My oldest son is very impressed with what you have done to make all of this. Don't stop man.
