Boba Fett helmet build, ongoing project.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

No ****, hockey? I would have thought that would be the one sport no one watches there.

Man oh man I'm excited to see how these come out

:)

i've never been so nervous...

i dont know whether i should of left the gap out and then i could of just did it on the casts i pull, too late now though...:facepalm
caused all kinds of problems getting out the master.

eventually got there
20120804_213520.jpg

20120804_213540.jpg

roughly trimmed it, bit worried about trimming it too much and pulling away something important, any tips on trimming it would be a massive help.

tomorrow, remove my other two moulds and maybe attempt a pull on my first mould.

things (still) to do:
-accurate dent, no idea how im going to do that though...
-some dents to fill in on the dome and smooth out
-fix curve on the the right cheek

i see an end in sight, but its still seems a fair distance away.

ALSO, any tips on cleaning out my mould before i try to cast it, the silicone just hangs on to any bits of dirt or dust that comes within 5 foot of it
Okay I wouldn't worry to much about trimming it perfect thats good like you have it, before you cast it dust the inside of your mold with baby powder and make sure you blow out any excess this will give you a nice casting and will take care of anything sticking to it, just fill it up to the top of the mold its okay if it goes over because you can flat sand your piece to make it level and rid any excess resin, on your bucket I would say a brush on mold would be most cost effective thats how I plan to do mine like I did with my Jaws bust.

i got a release agent spray, so is the baby powder method necessary?
also, i asked on your thread but in-case you read this first, where did you buy your silicone from?(never mind that question i thought you were UK based for some reason)

popped out my other two moulds, happy enough with them. i am yet to attempt to pull a cast though.

fixed minor problems with bucket on the dome and the cheek. concerning my bucket, all i need to correct is the dent which im still not sure how to do and adjust the width of the visor gap along the eye line as it goes around the sides too much, thats a simple correction though.

once i can do that, slap it with some primer, smooth that down, and i will be happy to attempt to mould it, cast some ear caps and bolt them on, DONE!

QUESTION: if you've previously saw my thread and my vent i made for the back of the helmet, i made it from MDF, anyone know if i primer it, will it soak it up like a sponge? if so how can i primer it without that happening, is there a way of sealing it somehow beforehand.

edit: mould pictures

You could use a release agent i don't like using it to much it leaves that oily sticky feeling and you have to wash it of prior to painting on your dent being that your helmet is hollow you could cut it out then take some expoy sculpt and press it in to create the dent on mine its foam under the bondo so I'll dremel the dent out and sculpt it with the epoxy sculpt. And on the MDF you probably need to seal it if its pourous it will soak up your primer why not make it from styrene?

my first idea for my dent was to cut it out (more or less) completely, make a reverse mould of it, shove some bondo into the gap and press the mould into it to form the dent.

as for my vent, i spent about 2-4 days making it (or longer, it was a long time ago, i cant quite remember) so i dont fancy making another from styrene after the time i put into it :confused

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

The mdf will soak up the primer, you'll need at least 3 coats for it to soak up completely then sand it down and you'll have a nice, smooth piece.

the only thing that worries me is that because the MDF goes so thin, maybe 1mm, 2mm at best it will effect its structure and almost want to fall apart from becoming to weak.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

Not to hijack this thread, but is there a sizing test for this helmet?

I intend on making this for my brother-in-law for Xmas this year, and want to make sure it's going to fit him, even though it will be a display piece.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

Im 6 foot, 13 stone, to give you an idea for now since I can't measure my head atm, I didn't need to scale it though and it's perfect size I would say.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

okay well...first attempting casting and first failure, looking back it could have been alot worse

i spent a bit too long mixing my part A and B so when it came to pouring my second cast half of the resin had hardened.
first cast
20120810_182137.jpg

came out nice, as i poured the second the resin slowed stop pouring out and as i tilted it forward to look in the cup...
20120810_182155.jpg

PLOP!

after a couple of minutes of panicing i'd ruined everything i left it to dry out a bit and then peeled it out but it at least showed some promise...
20120810_183426.jpg

second attempt worked out better
20120810_184749.jpg

20120810_184755.jpg

all drying out now.

edit: first cast was successful
20120810_195155.jpg

casts of the other two were again a failure, this time i didn't mix the resin for long enough (i can't win, can i? :facepalm) and it didn't set, stayed really gooey, ripped it out and had another attempt trying my best to mix it without spending too long doing so.

edit #2: my third attempt at my other pulls turned out like damn near perfect, at least to me anyway
heres the set so far
20120810_202231.jpg

i'll be doing a couple more tomorrow, hopefully with much less failures and set backs

Hi rosskow, your doing great so far, for all the hastle you certainly nailed it in the end :thumbsup

I made the same mistakes with my first mould (nerves were shot to hell and my hands were well shaky too :lol).

I use the countdown function on my phone to time my mixing now (total resin/silicone work time minus degass time; in my case 2.4min) gives me the total mix/pour time I have left. In your case it's just the pour time you will need to subtract.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

looks good Rosskow. I need to stop trolling the forums and get back to building my bucket...stupid work cutting into my hobby time o_O

oh i know how you feel, thats why its took me over a year to get to this point but its definitely paid off so far. and as for your build, get back to it, you're missing out on that satisfying feeling from a night in the garage sanding for 4 hours :)

more ear caps coming out much better now, no sloppy messes any more (knock on wood)

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

Mate I am in awe of how far you have come with this, what an absolutely fantastic build your doing. Mistakes and errors are all part of this, its what makes us learn, and look how well your popping out ear caps now.

Hows the molding materials anyways? Did you order from that company I said?
Im really looking forward to seeing you start the helmet up

i am pretty sure i ordered the exact materials you suggested, i just wish i had a local(ish) shop i could go to for materials and help. the silicone worked great (dont know why its called Tomps value), fast cast resin is coming out great and release agent worked perfect, can't fault any of the materials.

i am hoping to get my helmet moulded maybe end of September, need to look into that more though as it'll be alot different from these 1 piece moulds.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

This is looking superb!! Love the molds and the extra elbow grease on the helm

can you tell how it looks, i dont think its quite right but what do you think? :confused

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

The dent looks Good :thumbsup, you'll get some people and say oh it's not quite right. I have seen some Fett Helmet builds on the Dented Helmet and they look like some kids school project like it's made of cardboard and people are like wow that looks awesome! LOL! Your helmet is looking great it got me wantining to make one you don't have far to go on yours don't stop Rosskow!!! :lol.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build) WIP still...

thanks for the encouraging words Ray, but i am probably one of those people who'd say "oh its not quite right" because i want it to be as close as i can get it (within my ability)

i think the dent it about the right shape, position and orientation but its a little shallow

edit: after looking at some reference pictures the dent is too small, still right shape, place and orientation but i need to figure out a way to enlarge it, how i can do that i have no idea.

To enlarge it just make a out line on the outside of the dent to the size you want it and cut it out I don't know if yours is solid underneath or what material you used but if you enlarge it you may have to resculpt the dent just guessing here.
