Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien)

:lol nice! :lol It doesnt rain all the time here you know :lol
In fact its very hot today.

Thanks, as long as I've got about 6-8 months I'll be happy :)

Very hot...I bet it hasn't even hit thirty, right? :lol

I'm a Taffy, originally...it DOES rain all the time there! :)

PS I've never had silicone go off in less time than that. Have used silicone that was years old without problems sometimes, though I wouldn't take that chance with anything likely to be damaged in the process.

Thats the Rambaldi head as I call it. Its such a shame to see it in that condition :cry I must admit it would be lovely to restore it, I wonder if the original moulds are still kicking about??
From what I can tell, Rambaldi made a polyester under skull, then fully mechanised it. I believe it was then fitted with a latex all over skin that was cast from the same moulds as the other heads used in the movie.

Is this on display in the Giger museum??

I'm pretty sure those teeth are chrome plated resin, you can see the tips of a couple of the fangs missing.

I've just spent the last two hours reading this thread start to finish. I cannot wait to see the results and the casting process. This is just an absolutely stunning piece of work, with an incredibly complete build log and great photos.

That was from an exhibit a couple years ago in Frankfurt.

Giger Work Catalog - Exhibition at the German Film Museum, 2009

Lots of good photos to be found of this exhibit.

Thanks Nick :) thats a great picture! I havent seen this one before.
With the Alien in the foreground its very clear that there definately is a separate under part that finishes the dome to give the impression of it wrapping right over as one peice :) (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Thanks Nick :) (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

A few more pic's:

Heres another pic of the Rambaldi head. It was in better condition here but had already started to break down:

blech! :sick Post-79 designs

Dunno why, but despite the interesting ideas some of the later designers had, the prop departments just never really "nailed it" with the look and feel of the beast like the original did. I'll give 3 a small pardon because they did try at least to go for a more Giger-look, even if it was a considerable redesign. I think its the lips/face and the smaller 6 fingered hands that look like Giger paintings that I like. The rest just wasnt realized as well as it could have been, and the ADI suits just plain got it wrong by using a short mid-5 foot actor with a stocky bulky build and cut so many corners it just looks like a mess at the end of the day. Dont even get me started on the "Space-Velociraptor" of A:R and beyond.

That said, I wonder why nobody has tried to refine the Rambaldi design to where it has the same look and dynamics, but a slightly improved inner mechanism to be lighter and more actor friendly. Dont get me wrong, the later mechanical heads and these fan made projects are good and beyond my ability to create, but just feel like they got it "wrong" with the animations of the prop. They came off as too emotive, too organic, they opened too wide too fast, the lips were too expressive. Just a far cry from the organic and yet mechanical look and feel of the 79 Giger/Rambaldi prop. Sure while it may look "outdated" by todays "monster makers", its slow, symmetrical, hydraulic, and engineered look just fits what the creature is supposed to be.

Ok rant over :)

I love the A3 head design and rod puppet. Putting Tom in the suit was maybe not the best approach, as you say, and kind of jarred with the leanness of the puppet. Detail wise, the double-thumbed Giger hands and the skull face half hidden by that dome kick all kinds of arse IMO, so it's the original for me, then the A3, then the Aliens, then the Space Velociraptors. I am so stealing that.

But emotive...what would you have said if they'd used Giger's 'female lips' design on the A3, then? :lol

Well at least the A3 had those lips as you point out. If its going to have fleshier expressive lips, let them be the slightly more human-esque look of that one. The Aliens lips and jaw moved too quickly, were too large, opened WAY too wide, and looked "fake" artificial. the A:R has the ungodly large jawline and hideously ugly pointed chin to go with it, and the lips had an oddly funky shape and kept constantly twitching like it was having some sort of seizure.

So yeah, im pretty much with you. 79 Giger is the best and always will be, then A3 because it represents a refined Giger approach, and then Aliens and then the cinematic abortions. ;)

Beautiful work, very clean!

That's great knowing that every references are a bit different.
