'Blind Build' idea - Dr. Theopolis from 'Buck Rogers'...

So, I'm sure that someone has built a copy of Dr. T from 'Buck Rogers', previously.

However, as I was considering this build again today, (after a joking exchange with a friend about TV theme songs which evolved into imagining mash-ups of things like Dr. Theo with Fred Sanford's voice or KITT with Captain Picard's voice & Fred's attitude), it occurred to me that the things I've built thus far - mostly - are built on the research of folks who've done work before me.

The couple of builds that I've done that have been particularly satisfying are the builds I've done completely independently of anything other than screenshots/pictures & my own perspective/decisions. The companion cube that started me down this whole prop building path, in particular, is something I'm really proud of, (& I'm certain others could do the work equally as well if not significantly better), because it was all doped out by yours truly as I made the thing.

Anyway, I thought it would be particularly interesting to purposefully IGNORE all previous builds of something I wanted to make, with the exception of measurements & possibly original material composition information. A 'Blind Build', for lack of a better description.

Has this occurred to everyone else here, besides me? :) I just thought it would be interesting to document not only the build but the discovery - again. That's part of the fun, I think...

Thoughts?

Thanks for looking!

Well I've built several and am building five more for clients right now, so I guess I am the last person you want have post on your thread :).

So since you are doing this as a blind build, I guess I will wish you good luck. I think it's an interesting idea. Screen caps on this piece don't tell half the story, but it's a fun piece to build.

The two projects I'm working on right now (just at the beginning) seem to both be things that no one else has tried yet. I have to be honest that part of the interest of making them is the attempt at selling some kits in the junkyard, but the fact that I'm the only one that's attempting something makes it both exciting and unique. I'd love to be able to make a bit of scratch of what I make, but moreso I want the bragging rights of saying "Hells ya, that's MY creation that guy is collecting" Picking something that's been done 50 times over makes it much harder, you'll have to make yours 50 times better to stand apart.

I agree with Gibb...

The reason I took on Theo initially was in large part because no one had ever done it, and once I had my head wrapped around it I was pretty positive I could do and do it super well. Same with my Quantum Leap hand links.

I tend to stay away from stuff people have already done, unless I feel really good I can do it better. I don't say that to encourage you to do something else, I think it will great to see what you come up with if you choose to pursue this.

As far as what information is out there that you can look at outside of what I've posted, I doubt you will find much. I happened to have access to some really good photos of a screen used piece and I'm not sure they are readily available.

Either way...good luck!

Looking forward to your progress.

:) I knew I'd seen some other replicas somewhere along the line. Probably yours, if you posted about em' here. :D

For me, part of the joy in the process is that figuring out bit. I'm totally open to any measurements you have, (& detail about the ORIGINAL regarding materials), but otherwise I don't wanna' know anything. I did a little bit of research after posting this thread the other day & it's actually a bit of a challenge to avoid extra details...

Thanks for the response! :)

Since I'm makin' it for me, I'll make it to the best of my ability. If it satisfies me, then I'll consider it a win. :) I'm not lookin' to one up anyone... :D

Thanks for respondin'!

Thanks~! So far, I've started on the background of the internals for Dr. T in GIMP...but haven't done much else. :)

I'll post a pic when I have somethin' of consequence to show...

Thanks for the response!
