Blade Runner Inspired Office Build: Deckard's Apartment

Wow! What a year! My wife's health has drastically improved, thanks to getting her DMT (disease-modifying-therapy) dialed in, and her diligence in walking with me EVERY night. The immensely terrifying issues my son has been going through the past 3 years was suddenly, completely, and permanently resolved in the best way we could have hoped for on October 16th. The frequent intense anxiety and panic attacks I started having in May because of what he was going through are all but non-existent now. We're all 3 happier and healthier, and just all around higher functioning with the massive weight lifted.
We have decluttered the house and invested time and energy into making it cute, cozy, and comfortable.
Here's January 1, 2023 vs. January 1, 2024.

It was a LOT of work (and I still have quite a bit of work left before it's finished) but I've loved every minute of it so far and am really enjoying the space much more.
Thanks for all the encouragement and feedback along the way. And a Happy New Year to everyone!
One of the biggest transformations I’ve seen in my life, hats off to you brother

Update: It's not another lamp this time, I swear!

This little jar / vase / pot / urn thing is sitting next to the "BeoScreen" in Deckard's living room. You don't get a very good look at it other than a few seconds when he steps over his couch, coming from the piano to go process the photos through the Esper machine. You can also see it in the Making Of documentary "Dangerous Days"

I searched for months trying to find anything close and came to the conclusion this is not a mass-produced item. There were some similarly shaped vases from Haeger (a couple of other items in the apartment come from Haeger) but they were way too big and didn't have the right proportions.

I then scoured ebay and etsy every day for months trying to see if anything close enough would pop up for sale, but nothing ever did. I wanted the general shape, the throw lines (ribs) and general color to be close, and although it's a very plain looking vase, nothing even close ever turned up.

So I reached out to a few pottery artists on Etsy to see if anyone would be up for a commissioned piece. Only one person took me up on it because of the unpredictability of clay when being fired. So many variables can affect the final size, shape, and color.
A lady in Israel happily took on the commission so I sent her what little reference photos I had, along with some estimated measurements and asked her to just get as close as she could.

She promptly replied within a day or two with this picture. She got the general shape and throw lines very close and knew to make it several inches too big so that it would shrink to the correct size during firing.

Fast forward a few weeks to allow her time to fill up her kiln and do a firing, then ship it off to me and it arrived today! I'm surprised with all that's going on in Israel that the mail wasn't more delayed, but it arrive in really good time.

Anyway, here's the finished piece. I'm very happy with how it turned out, considering how unpredictable clay is. I think it fills out that space nicely.

What a heart-warming post Trent: I'm very glad to hear you and your family are doing better. All the best for 2024 and I jealously look forward to more amazing office updates.

I know this is super nitpicky but the glaze on the vase was a bit too bright/yellow and it was bugging me so I used some wood stain as a wash to darken it down a bit to get the right shade. Much better and it even helped pull out the little details in the throw lines.

Bit of progress on the door numbers.
They're pretty wonky so I'm not sure how accurate I want them. I may try to idealize them a bit.
There's no straight on view of them so I had to separate them, then skew, rotate, and size them individually to get closer to what would be a straight view. Now I'm just working on a vector so I can have them cut in brass. They're pretty thick, at least 1/2". I doubt I can find a place that'll cut them in 1/2" brass. The best I'm seeing is 1/4". so I may make two and stack them, depending on how that looks.

Those "idealized" version of the door numbers look darn good to me! I dig that font! How are you planning to attach them?

Going back to the Harrison Ford thing, I could care less about celebrities, autographs, etc.. Having said that Harrison Ford coming by and seeing your office, we can all agree, would be cool. He might actually do it. You said he is in the area sometimes and your office is more real than any set he was on during filming. It's not a prop collection, but an actual, real Blade Runner office. He may want to see it.

Just a thought.

Never have I ever sat down on my sofa and muttered the words "hell yeah" in such quantaties. This entire thread is absolutely stunning, what an incredible space, craftsmanship and attention to detail. I'm so thankful I didn't find this thread early, because I just got a netflix level binge out of sitting here going through every update from page one. Absolutely breathtaking work!
