Update: It's not another lamp this time, I swear!
This little jar / vase / pot / urn thing is sitting next to the "BeoScreen" in Deckard's living room. You don't get a very good look at it other than a few seconds when he steps over his couch, coming from the piano to go process the photos through the Esper machine. You can also see it in the Making Of documentary "Dangerous Days"
I searched for months trying to find anything close and came to the conclusion this is not a mass-produced item. There were some similarly shaped vases from Haeger (a couple of other items in the apartment come from Haeger) but they were way too big and didn't have the right proportions.
I then scoured ebay and etsy every day for months trying to see if anything close enough would pop up for sale, but nothing ever did. I wanted the general shape, the throw lines (ribs) and general color to be close, and although it's a very plain looking vase, nothing even close ever turned up.
So I reached out to a few pottery artists on Etsy to see if anyone would be up for a commissioned piece. Only one person took me up on it because of the unpredictability of clay when being fired. So many variables can affect the final size, shape, and color.
A lady in Israel happily took on the commission so I sent her what little reference photos I had, along with some estimated measurements and asked her to just get as close as she could.
She promptly replied within a day or two with this picture. She got the general shape and throw lines very close and knew to make it several inches too big so that it would shrink to the correct size during firing.
Fast forward a few weeks to allow her time to fill up her kiln and do a firing, then ship it off to me and it arrived today! I'm surprised with all that's going on in Israel that the mail wasn't more delayed, but it arrive in really good time.
Anyway, here's the finished piece. I'm very happy with how it turned out, considering how unpredictable clay is. I think it fills out that space nicely.
