Blade Runner Blaster news: model kit version of the Tomenosuke Blaster is coming

I don't know how Nobu did it but there is enough graphite in the plastic for them to take a nice polish. Best with a buffing wheel and some light buffing compound. End's up looking pretty metallic.

Thanks DaveG. Maybe I'll try that with a coat of Future tinted slightly blue or something. I'll experiment a little.

Got your barrel installed and it worked perfectly. Now I'm sanding the metal parts that need bluing based on your earlier recommendations. I found some 1500 grit. Polish to follow. It's looking great but what a PITA!

Thanks again for all the tips everyone.

update to my build:

sanded, primed, and painted the side covers + grip frame in satin black this weekend. side covers look great. wasn't too happy with how the grip frame turned out--may have to sand that down and repaint.

wet sanded, nevr dull polished, and birchwood-casey blued the other metal parts. did this using the included cotton dauber instead of diluting and soaking the parts in.

gave the receiver two coats of bluing and polished with steel wool after smoothing out with microfiber cloth. the finish isn't super dark, but i like it more grey with worn bluing than the solid dark grey/black that tomenosuke shows in their photos.

anything else i should be doing?

Looks great for a weathered look. The steel wool gives the shiny edges easily.

I'd say if you're not happy with the grip frame dip that sucker in stripper, or acetone it off rather than sand. It'll save you time and elbow grease. It won't hurt the metal.

Don't forget to blue the little toothed washer. I completely forgot mine.

Thanks for that, Karl! And thanks so much to Nobu. I'm going to see if I can get that to work. It's hard for me to believe the barrel in that photo is plastic!

More sanding. Sigh...

awesome photos by nobu-san. can someone take a stab at trying to call out what's going on in each photo?

If I'm not mistaken he's spraying a zinc paint on the barrel and then using chemical blackening on it. I know there were pictures of the zinc paint being used on an early build (long before the kits were available). You can get a pretty nice polish on the naked plastic but not like that. The barrel before blackening is too light to just be the plastic surface and the chemical blackening wouldn't have that effect on the plastic anyway.

Here's the photo of the paint they used a few years back. I think the can on the left is primer. the one on the right says "Zinc 96%". I've not found a similar product in the U.S.

Apparently zink spray is used as rust protection. Did a quick search and found several different brands available from car part dealers and building supplies here in Denmark. I suppose it's the same in the US.

Not all Zinc sprays and coatings are the same. Depends what other fillers or compounds/materials they have mixed with it, and the percentage ratio of zinc in the mix. I would also envisage that some would be cheap, for el-cheapo, rough applications and some would be of high quality, made by hi quality standards/manufacturers. The Japanese brand items that Dave G. showed are likely of good quality. ...Have to admit, I don't know much about these coatings and would investigate further myself into them and test some. :popcorn

Hmm... I can get a 98% cold-zink spray here locally. It's expensive (almost 20 bucks) but I'm gonna give it a try.

@ cratercritter. You are right. Almost all the spray cans I found was marked with the % of zink. And they were all 98% and over. I think this technique is awesome, I can't wait to test it. Looking at Nobu-sans pictures I think he is using a diluted mix of Aluminum Black.

Are you SURE he's spraying with zinc? There is no spray over on the Masking tape. The description of the photo says "Polish the surface of the plastic with sandpaper and Sponge Sanding Block Polishing Scouring Pad"

I emailed Nobu-san and he confirms that he does NOT use zinc spray. Apparently the plastic of the Charter Arms parts contains zinc!

I have a magnum 44 model gun that I re build to a Indy gun. The plastic on that also contains metal powder and I polished it and blued it with aluminum black, but it did not get that same metal shine as we see here. There must be much more metal in the Blade Runner kit. I just hope it isn't to brittle.
