Black series XWing Pilot helmet up for pre-order on Amazon

Ok..update..authentic ear cups in. I have to let it air out as I had to use some glue to get the new snap lock Velcro strips to stick so it has or off gas a bit. It fits very snugly now just like you would want if you were actually a pilot.

Where did you get the ear cups at, and how much?... if you don't mind me asking...

If anyone has been waiting, the Disney Shop has the XW bucket at $99.95, plus 25% off if you can add enough to bring your order to $100, and free shipping. I managed to get a hypothetical cart down to $77 for it with a plastic shopping bag.

That is indeed a better deal than Amazon with the $10 off.
My browser plug in added the code SAVEMORE and took $19.99 off.
Then used the code SHIPMAGIC for FREE shipping.
Added tax made it $$86.86 for me

Yep, SAVEMORE looks like a tiered discount. Over $75 is one discount, over $100 is slightly better - if you can find something super cheap, like...a buck, to get over a hundred, you'll bump the discount up a tier.

I don't think there has been any positive ID of what is actually used for the side cushion / ear pads.

Long ago many people assumed that all the X-Wing pilot helmet were buildups each using a real APH helmet. And therefore they assumed that they had real APH ear cups and padding installed. But now we know that all the helmets were just kit builds and there is no reason to believe they felt the need to seek out and use a lot of real or replica APH ear cups inside just because the base design was was an APH.

That's not to say it's a a bad idea to do so. I have real APH ear cups in my fan Luke helmet and replica APH ear cups in a custom fan helmet. They work well and look nice.

I'm not even sure that the side cushions used in the helmets throughout the original trilogy are consistent. On some pilots in A New Hope, you can see the padding ant the bottom of the helmet, and others you can't. Looks like they were all removed for Hoth in place of the padded cloth helmet liners. Not sure what was seen after Luke left Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. The padding in the limited scene in Return of the Jedi shows a large thick dark padding.

I know there is a thread here somewhere about the coloring. There are cases the the padding looks tan and other where it looks like they tried to color it black, and other cases where it looks like the darkening was for the purpose of weathering. I think in this image...

...the interior looks more like the liner of an old motorcycle/scooter helmet.

Update... I was talking to someone over on this thread...

He says he has images of some of the helmets which utilize APH ear cups. He will post images soon.

Update..
saw the images and they turned out to be images we all seen before. There was no real evidence of actual ear cups being used. Still look like the liner shown in the image in the link I posted in previous post.

Sorry. When I went back to ebay I saw the last set sold yesterday.
They come up often enough. Just do a search of "aph 6 ear"
Here's a close up of what they look like installed. They add a nice real world element to the helmet. The big cushy ones that are installed in the licensed replicas are probably more comfy but not really a representation of what you are likely to see in a real helmet imho.
Link please?

Got mine a week ago while traveling and just now opened it. Very happy with this. For being a Hasbro toy, mass produced, and only costing me $53 after reward points, I'm satisfied. Some tweaking to the weathering and maybe some ESB dirt and I'll be happy.

I paused the scene where Luke crashes his snow speeder in ESB and looks like he definitely has either real or mock tan/brown ear cups. They look just like my real ones do when compressed next to the head. The foam is just covered in a flat grain leather and the edges are straight cut and don't wrap completely around the foam.
They can clearly be seen in this pic I snapped on my camera phone.

Sorry. While I can see that you want believe those are flight helmet ear cups, I just don't see any convincing info here. Still just looks like the liner. I'm still open to the fact that it is possible but as of yet, I have not seen definitive proof. The history of this board is built on people seeing what they want to see. Right now, for me it remains in the "I think Ben's lightsaber grip is a motorcycle grip" category. I'm not out to prove you wrong. I will keep an eye out for anything new and if I can help support your claim, I will.

It's not that deep to me really. That's just the way it looks to me. If it isn't there fine, but the right side looks more than liner to me" but it's ok to have different opinions..... it makes it more interesting.

My belief for prop and costume replica building has always been to be as knowledgable as possible about the details and construction of the real prop/costume so that as a replica builder, you can make wise and creative choices as how you want to proceed to build your own replica. That's not to say screen accuracy is the best or only way to build a replica, in fact, I often lean and prefer more idealized props and costumes.

It's just that I feel I want to put that power into the replica builder's hands to decide if and what type of deviation they choose to make. That a deviation in their build be that of their own choosing and not because they were misinformed.

Like for example the ear pads. Let's say we find out for 100% certainty that no ear cup were ever in any X-Wing flight helmet. Well, I would be sure to pass that info along to builders who wanted to know. However, I would also offer my own opinion that to add some type of ear cup would help with fit and also enforce the feeling that the person is wearing an actual flight helmet.

Got one of these today, it's nice.

The only jump-out error for me is, shouldn't the stripes on the forehead mohawk piece be yellow and grey rather than yellow and white?

I've never seen a photo of the screen used Luke with the white stripes. Some replicas, yeah, SU no.

I'd argue the originals were deliberately painted grey and as they got scuffed up the white plastic showed through. This is fairly obvious as you can see the same white scratches on the yellow segments.

It's nothing a bit of weathering or paint can't fix however.

Aside from that, paint apps for a mass produced piece are really quite good.

Got my X-wing helmet today. Now I have to decide whether to keep it as it is or do a custom paint job.

Buy more and repaint them instead.

I got mine the other day and I absolutely love it and want more. Is anyone else going to buy more to repaint them? Unfortunately there's just too many pilots to choose from. Does anyone know where I can find images of the helmets and what colours were used on them? And decals. Need decals too.
