Black series XWing Pilot helmet up for pre-order on Amazon

Hey Everyone!
I've been working on a few repaints of these helmets... and I'll see what I can do to post some of the tear-down videos I've been putting together for disassembly of these things (it's a tricky beast, but I can get them completely apart now). As for the repaints I've done, and am currently working on, here are a few pics...

They look awesome!!

Those look great DJb1138! Love them - sent you a PM about your expertise! Being able to take these apart would be so helpful for painting!

Here are my two on the go, a Red 4 who just needs a couple more decals on the side to finish, and one that I'm still in two minds as to whether to go for Blue Leader or Porkins.

Can recommend using the powder weathering technique if you get a chance! Flick dark powder on with a brush and then stipple it around.

Good call!

That was going to be the next step - at least a little bit of dry pigment weathering. I was using a combination of screencaps from Rogue One and the Anovos pre-order prototype to get the weathering "scheme" down for Merrick, and it seemed like the "grime" was kind of dense in some spots and such.

... And the completed Blue Leader (Gen. Antoc Merrick) from Rogue One.

Side note - the story behind the Black Series helmet for this repaint/build is interesting... I picked this one up from a guy in the Star Wars Buckets FB group, he had - very unfortunately - gone through a house fire, which damaged/destroyed majority of his collection. This Luke helmet was pretty badly smoke-damaged, but wasn't warped or structurally damaged in any way. I purchased the helmet from him, with the intent on resurrecting it in some way, and after cleaning, wet-sanding, and a much needed deodorizing, I was able to get the helmet to a state where it was a good, cleaned-up, base for a repaint/mod... and this is where it ended up. A new existence as Blue Leader.

This was asked earlier but I didn't see any answers: has anybody found a blast shield that fits these helmets?

The trick to potentially making a blast shield for these helmets is not necessarily the overall shape of the piece, it's the weird top-bit of the visor that clips into the lining of the helmet.

... not a stellar picture of the visor's "clip in" bit on the top, but that's what I'm referring to. I'll get far better pictures of that in the next build (I've got two more Black Series helmets coming).

I can’t tell exactly but when you start the simulation do you have to keep pressing the button to get the next effect/sequence? the first time it was just an idle hum for a long time. Then a few times a lot of stuff happened every time I’d press the button. Not sure if it be a coincidence.

Got two more in-progress... thought I'd share with the group! :D

I know... These guys have been done quite alot, but I've always thought Wedge is just an epic pilot, and Red 4's helmet is such a stand-out, cool, design.

Looks great! What color did you use for the green on Wedge’s helmet? I’ve been trying to color match it, but haven’t found anything definitive.

Thanks! The color mix on Wedge's helmet that I worked out is an interesting one... I layered color, as opposed to mixing and then laying it on. It's these colors (all RustOleum paints, as that was easy to access at my local Home Depot) layered over eachother:
  1. primer: flat white (the "painter's touch" 2x one)
  2. "tonal" base: Charcoal Gray (also from the "painter's touch" line)
  3. color base" Hunter Green
I've found that depending on the base color you're starting with - laid over the primer - "shifts" the overall hue/tone of the main color you're working with. In the case of Wedge's helmet, Hunter Green over Charcoal Gray looks really good for Wedge. I've put a pic below of the three I used, specifically:

You guys are killing me! Between this thread and the Hasbro Boba Fett thread.. man, I just want to buy all the Black Series lids and customize like crazy! We are in a very fortunate time.. I remember the Mass produced products you used to be able to get at costume stores and they don’t hold a candle to this stuff.
