Black/Red Nike Mag Project

I used 10mm Perspex because I had a heap of the blocks which were cutouts from another job. Ideally, 3mm or 5mm Perpsex would be better. Use gum like blue-tac to get a seal around the edges. I used hot glue, and it was messy and time consuming and it stuck to both the elastomer and the Perspex.

Can you heat silicone rubber to a liquid state?

I just want to finish these uppers, then I will hook right in to make clear soles. I am almost over these already because my hands are so sore from being punctured by big ass needles, cut from this nylon bonded thread and just tired from pulling it all tight. I cheated on the edges today. I was supposed to sew these, and just folded and glued. All done, looks good and one step closer to the end :)

I think you can melt it down, I should try that but what you think of this?

FYI - It's still a tester, I can get more of this silicone apparently, they said so long as I don't go over £1000 lol, that would be like 1000kgs of rubber!!

While I await more silicone rubber I decided to do the tongues myself...

Still the outside trim to sew on..

WOW that sole looks awesome!

I didn't turn my tongues inside out. I just stitched them as you have so the back liner acts as the actual liner, then ran the ribbon around the hide the stitching. I found it tended to keep its shape better this way.

Ye the soles are getting there, I think my next attempt will be ALOT better as I started to run out of silicon near the end and had to use a latex glove with cold water to rub it in.

The tongues I used the black leatherette for outside then a soft fabric for the back, I turned them inside out.

The black leatherette I cut in half(where the flappy top piece is) then sewed it together. Basically I replicated the v2 tongue.

I will go back and take another look at this soon. I have the US11 soles (thank you :) ) and the US8 soles here that both need clear rubber added. I think done properly, it might be a tube per sole. I also need to get this Vac Chamber up and running so I get bubble free moldings.

Originally, I turned mine inside out as well and I got the same shape as yours. I then decided that it looked neater the way it was and the ribbon would hide the stitching anyway.

Something I did differently was to not sew the tongue all the way down, rather the ribbon is sewn to the top layer only. I'll document this soon. The tongue is then joined at the base so there is a loop from the side profile which allows me to run a really wide (4" or 100mm) strip of elastic between the two halves and attach to each side of the shoe upper at the base.

I came up with this idea after the rather long discussion in the NIKE MAG Knockoff thread about what elastics to buy and even the high end bra stuff didn't seem strong enough to give a good tight fit. This stuff must be used on granny undies or something because I found it in the same section and it is very strong :) It is also $25/m :eek and I used half a meter on the two shoes.

Im using bra elastic that I buy on ebay.works perfectly.

Yeah all the 1/2" stuff I looked at is not as strong as I would like. So what I did with build 2 was to use this 4" wide stuff and it passes through the tongue. False laces then lay on top of the tongue to look the part. I am pretty impressed with how this part of build 2 worked out, so will do the same for build 3 :)

I took both your advice Cavx and Cloneprops with putting a trim around the tongue and also finished my soles basically, need to get more silicone for last piece and waffled side's. i am also planning to protrude the rubber sole as well.

Now I need to decide if I leave it that colour or dye it slightly red... :confused

Great work Taff83 :) Tongues look 200% over what they did now they have trim.

Umm, I think leave the soles clear and rely on the red EL to provide the colour change.

Thanks Cavx, ye I am very happy with the tongues now! The trim took 3 hours to do though with alot of concentration and blood pouring out of my fingers but was worth it :D

My rubber soles have come out really well, glueing them believe it or not is the hardest part, too much glue and it soaks through the rubber to create "black spots" so you have to just tack it down in the corners Ect.

Still need to get the square mat but I'm going to try using the rubber sole off the v1 again as a template, if it works I can assemble all the pieces together and have these finished hopefully in the next week or two.

Ha! Do you have the same issue where you can't find a thimble big enough to fit your fingers? My solution is to use a craft mat and piece of EVA foam. From the top, I stab the needle down until it touches the mat, then flip the work over and use both the area of the material and the craft mat to push the needle (which is now pushing on the craft mat) to drive the needle through. Takes a bit more time. Really saves your fingers :)

I had the same issue with the leather mags where I had to glue in small parts because the exothermic reaction of the Shoe Goo going off caused the clear elastomer to warp and not sit flat. Fun and games for sure and why I came up with the syringe method to better control the flow.

Are these "black spots" caused by trapped air?

Cool. Looking forward to seeing this.

Hey i like that sh1t! i need to try that on my next tongue tonight, what a easy and effective way to stop my fingers from falling off :D

The black spots are from the colour of the sole bonding to much to the silicone, only have to glue tiny tiny drops here and there... big amounts (so to speak) of glue will cause it to show through more than you would think.

I reckon 2 weeks time and i'll have one done for sure but who knows what problems will arise, lets hope not though..

Yeah hand sewing gives your hands a work out. And that needle and be hard to pull through at times. There is always an easier way :)

So what glue are you using to bond these?

I hope to have this new build done at least ready to glue to the soles in about the same time. What used to take me an hour to do now takes about 20min and I do a much neater job too :)

i used loctite liquid glue, same stuff as i used for the v2 sole's but seriously i cant stress it enough use a tiny tiny bit as its so strong that glue, transparent and very fast to dry :)

i need to sit down at some point and write a procedure out for the assembly of all the pieces (e.g step 1-10) on what gets glued first.

just got 6 tubes of silicone from the guy at work, fingers crossed i get these done tonight.

oh i plan on using 3v setup for two el panels and all 12 leds hooked up to the digi cam 1300mah batteries i got... i so hope this works :confused

Few more pics of what I have been upto over the past week.. I'm happy enough with how it's looking but I think I can do better so going to redo the soles once I have the rest stuck down as if I continue this silicone trip I'm going to go insane and probably give up completely.

I have added some detail to the tongues using the "size" stickers off the v1's.

Any feedback would be great!

Look spot on! I reckon you should get a pair of V2s and dye them black and stick red el in those. That would be bad ass!

Cheers ye I like the red EL, makes a change to my v2's :D

I did originally plan this but I just can't till I get my wedding out the way first so I had no option to do my own custom rubber soles. I can always seperate the upper from the sole when I get my other pair and then use v2 soles but till then I have to keep on track with the build or risk losing motivation and giving up "touch wood"

Only thing holding me up from glueing all this down and finishing the shoes is this 3v inverter test, I hope it works but I have two 9v wiring looms ready and waiting incase, just have to install a high mah 9v batt, dc charger and diode.

Here's a photo of the el in a dark room

Shouldn't the label say "Made In Scotland"?

Haha yes I suppose, these are still ok though for now, what do you think about the clear soles and red el? I took your advice and didn't dye the rubber soles, I think your suggestion has made these look the best they can so massive thanks :)
