Bigturc's Tie Bomber thread

Began gluing down the Prince of Wales part to the hemi cap tonight. Worked on this about 2 hours I think ...

I'm not sure how it should have been done, but my POW parts are a little short from the cap lip so I'll add putty later when I'm there!

Update on the bomb tube ... I wanted to keep the outside lip that is visible in this ref pic ... next step, bondo and more sanding ...

Looks great Al!. That part sure is a PITA to make, but yours looks the ticket!.
I love how everybody's approach to construction is different, yet the results are truly great.

Hey, you going to put a cockpit in this Al, or just leave empty as per the actual model?.
Keep it coming.
Stu

Thanks Stu, funny, I was asking myself exactly the same question! I'm not such a purist so I might just keep the option possible .. I think I like the idea! Now ... duck and run!! ;)

The Saturn parts ..
Here's the parts that I'm gonna work on next and what I plan to do with them ... note that numbers are approx. what I think I will end up with.

1. Basically, I'm gonna glue the saturn cylinder together before trimming it .. it will surely help doing it straight.
2. Glue the V ring to the triple tip conical shape.
3. Fit everything togethere.
4. Repeat twice! ;)

Hey Al,

It's really hard trying to remember back to all my measures & well, just how I built some of the sub-assemblies, not to mention I don't have my bomber on hand at the mo but....

Pic-4, I don't remember taking any material away from the bottom or top of this part to fit.

Pic-3, 18mm seems way too high, maybe around 10mm tops, but don't hold me to that exact measure. Can anyone confirm this?.:confused

Stu

I agree Stu, mine where nowhere near 18MM like say 8mm (after sanding back) at best, possibly less. Just sand the inner wall till the smaller Sat V parts drop in to the right depth. I think you may be over thinking it Al, looks like a lot of work.

You can see in the ref that the Saturn V ring that attaches to the body tubes has been thinned down inside to all ow the cup part to drop in to the correct height.

loll .. you are both right mates, I wrote that post way too late last night and gonna correct it right now.

Stu, that red line on pic 4 was just to say how deep that part will sit and yes, I definitely meant 8mm or maybe 9mm ..

Guy, yeah, when I was writing that post, I was asking myself the same thing .. why the heck do I go to the trouble .. it's really the easiest part of the trimming .. really! Gotcha on the trimming .. I didn't notice this before and you may be just right!

Update on the "thrusters". I removed the sketches I had done in the previous post .. For once, they were wrong and really, I just did it without overthinking it and it was just fine!

I ended up keeping exactly 8mm at the end of the Saturn can.
I thinned down the smallest end to fit the ring inside until if would fit in with about 3mm coming out ... Really happy with the end result!

Christmas in march for me! Finally got a look at these kits that I didn't have yet and I decided to try a scriber too! :)

2 thumbs up for OminiModels!! Flat shipping, great price and I ended up not even paying custom fees for these .. Awesome!

I'm not missing much now .. still haven't found the Flak 38 sd.ah.51. The rest is either in the mail (or should I say lost in the mail .. loll) or already covered.

Guys, I was just told the bomber cap is a VHD-200 and not a VHE-200. I've been looking at the profile of the part on the plastruct web site, and the VHE seems to be the correct profile .. the VHD is the one used on the AT-ST no?

Can anyone please confirm this .. cause if it is .. I just spent all my POW parts on the VHE and I'll need to correct that info ASAP.

Can't remember what part numbers I ordered, I do know that I had to sand the hell out of the back side of the bomber tube cap in order to fit the top profile of the pictures I used as reference......result, the cap ended up a smaller dia. then the tube.

Ron, I hear you .. I'm changing all my post to reflect this now. Hopefully, no one else is gonna do that mistake again .. I'll redo that part later when I can get my hands on the parts again!

That's crappy, its good that you found that error tho, too bad about the wasted parts.
I think I may have to order the proper cap now too and redo mine. I found a styrene sheet at our local hobby store that had the grooves, that's what I used in place of the POW doors so its not a big deal for me. Thankfully. :D

I'm looking into the red leds I need to order .. looks like 3mm leds to me if I look at the Saturn part .. I may as well wire it to a battery even though I don't see them lit in the movie (anyone knows?) .. I'm thinking to be buying those on the bay : 3mm LEDs

Spent some time on this .. everything is blue tak'ed for now as I have no idea what I'm doing! :) Once everything is closed to final placement, I'll draw the line in relation to kit parts and scribe them on my tubes!

Looking good Al!!! Thanks for showing how you sanded the cockpit top Leopold part! I was still thinking of using the Dremel on that.
