Bandai 1/72 PG Millennium Falcon (also the Revell Germany rebox)

Re: Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon

While making my final tweaks, I found that this part was missing from the kit:

mclaren1.jpg

I think this is the same "A" shaped part from the Tamiya 1/12 Mclaren M23 which is used in various parts of the Falcon.

mclaren3.jpg

Traces of the part on the filming miniature:

mclaren4.jpgmclaren5.jpg

It may have been better to recast K10, but I simply carved a similar thing out of a styrene sheet and placed it.

... I decided to snip part K12 and transplanted L5 to where a similar part was missing, that I mentioned in this post:

https://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=262348&page=154&p=4449902&viewfull=1#post4449902

L5 is based on a shorter part than the one that should have been there, but near enough.

Also, I found this decal was not indicated on the instructions.

Fruehauf1.jpg

I assumed that it is the same mark as decal No.145, so I placed it there.

Fruehauf2.jpg

I have finished the kit.

I shall be replacing the plywood base with something a little more decent, after I finalize a place for the long term display.
I thank everyone in this thread for your comments and discussions, as well as for sharing your works. I enjoyed the build very much.

That is, bar none, the best fan-made Millennium Falcon I've ever seen. Absolutely insane.

Virtually indistinguishable from the real model pics back when she was new

A true master paint job

Re: Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon

Wow, that is just spot on. Terrific paint job and weathering. Well done. In fact its SO good it almost makes me not want to build mine now, as I'll never get it as good as yours!

I'm seeing and hearing a lot about Archive X paints and the use of Reefer White as a base. Is that what you have used?
I've haven't started to play with Archive X yet. I'm also wary of the fact that enamels seem to attack the plastic used by Bandai and this isn't a kit I'd want to see melt in front of me...

Archive X will not negatively effect the Bandai kits. I've been using it and it has gorgeous coverage

Very interesting. It looks like the part that was there was gone by 1978, when the black and white photos were taken!

But amusingly a hair that got stuck in the paintwork is still there to this day!

Thank you very much for your comments. I really appreciate. It was what kept me going through the build.

I used rattle cans. No airbrush.
Here is my color scheme:

What technique you used for streakings?

Tamiya's Weathering Master, applied mostly with sharp cotton buds.

Wow. That makes it even more impressive! The fact that your finished shots look so similar to the original promo images is amazing. Congratulations on such excellent work!

Re: Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon

I could be terribly wrong about this, and apologize in advance if I am...but I would venture that the original model makers back in the day might have also used rattle cans. just a theory. however, that statement in NO way is meant to detract from Lab's awesome results. I've seen some real genius done with rattle can. :thumbsup

Our very own RPF member Guy Cowan (who is the 'Guy' behind Archive X paints, has mentioned that the Floquil paints that ILM used for the big coats probably were sprayed from an aerosol can,....I think there's maybe photos with the Floquil cans in the background,....dunno??)

They definitely used automotive sprayers and air brushes, but it's certainly possible they used rattle cans as well. You can see the automotive sprayer and compressor hose in this picture of the Falcon in the original ILM (Van Nuys location) paint booth.

It's absolutely impressive that rattle cans were used. That being said, I will never use anything but an airbrush again. The control and ease of use is just too nice to give up. I will say that having to clean the airbrush is a pain in the butt. That's the only issue I have with mine. I think I need to get some more...lol

The research you have put into this build is amazing, Lab. And it's research I'm am shamelessly stealing and adding to mine! To paraphrase Jerry Macguire, you make me want to be a better modeler! :lol Seriously, yours is about as authentic to the 1977 Falcon as is possible from a commercial kit. I'm going to try to equal you, but I know I won't. I hate you, you magnificent *******. ;) :cheers
