This is one of the most fun props to make. And all of this community stuff makes it even better.

Alumilite - Products - Support Products - UMR

Try this stuff. I think this is the stuff my friend who taught me swears by. A release agent shouldn't change the color, it should go on clear. You apply it to the item your casting off of. A few light coats is plenty.

Thanks, but the one I posted will be cheaper because the shipping is free.

Ok, but just because it says it's a mold release agent doesn't necessarily mean it'll work like you want. Hopefully it won't be a problem but keep in mind cheaper is not better when you can waste a lot of money on one little area that rips or sticks.

It's from the same website as the rubber and it's the only release agent they have so it must work with their products.

My jacket is up for sale in the Junkyard.

MOD EDIT: Junkyard link removed.

I think i'm going to give up on trying to make this jacket and focus on getting the materials together and all to try to have the real deal made. Enough of us getting together to tackle this and there has to be a way to get these things made more accurate and functional for $500 or less. Somehow.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

What is the width and thickness of the buttons? Sorry I ask these questions a lot. I jsut want to make my jackets as accurate as possible.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

WOW that is impressive and I think could give an excellent result for this project if the right 'pattern' can be found.

Is the light fitting surface small pyramids? If so, you need to cast that first, then do the urethane on cloth from there. The reason being is I used a PCV rubber mat (might just paint a section of this for my jacket) to make the "waffle" effect on my clear soles for my MAGs. The mat is a series of small pyramids. The negative is a 'waffle' looking effect.

Not to go too far OT and drag this back to the shoes, but the real MAGs have this "waffle" on the sides only and the sole bottom is this cluster of small pyramids. The only way I can think of to recreate this is to take an imprint off the master, then take an imprint of that. Master is positive, copy is negative. Copy the the copy and you have another positive.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

They are inverted pyramid shapes. so one should only need to pour urethane over it.
Sorry, i was wrong. I just checked the smaller sized lightcover that i have and they are not Inverted (tho they look like that from the angle.)

Maybe with fabric and Plastidip on spray ?

Maybe. The fabric could also be a rubber cast made from a mold of something that has that texture.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

Good luck with that. I have made a small Plaster of Paris mold of the stuff I have here and I see no reason why a larger sheet could not be made. The PVC matting seems to have a very slight oily feel to it and came away from the plaster perfectly. Assuming whatever was poured into that removed as easily, this could be one way to do this.
