Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build NEW VIDEO JACKET pg 27!!!

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

There are tons of people on this site who have vast knowledge and experience molding and casting things. It shouldn't be too hard to find somebody.

When I make the casts for the sleeves, should I use a release agent beforehand?

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

Pitbull posted this on my thread and I thought it could help.

Gary, I retract what I said about splitting it. Looked to me like it wasn't but I stand corrected.

I could look into casting it. This split as an open mold would be easy to cast with a Flex 30 resin dyed black. I would want peoples opinion on how long a piece would need to be that could go from the zipper of the front around the the center of the back and that could be the joining point for a shorter mold. Then I would say you would need 3 lengths cast to make enough for one jacket.

I also want to look into trying to make the red/black florescent diffuser material sometime. Maybe with enough minds on this we can get the material all made and then somebody who knows how to sew it all together for us in the future for closer to screen accurate jackets.

How are you making the sleeves? Depending on what your using and what your mold is made of would help to determine if you need mold release and what kind. Not all mold release agents are made alike.

I'm glad we've got so many people in on this. It makes things way easier.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

I'm not sure I understand, your making your mold out of the plastic from measure cups? I think you are saying your going to use the cups as a "mold box". What material are you molding your sleeves in? Are you using a silicone, plaster, latex, etc.

The sleeves will be latex rubber, and the mold will be flexible plastic. But not out of buckets. Probably styrene.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

What you can do is make each bellow section out of latex. Then join the sections together with more latex, let dry, and then wella! It won't be that strong though i'm afraid. The latex will have to be pretty thick to last. I'm thinking you would be better off making them out of a cloth and just sewing them all together for these jackets in particular. If you were to go the casting route i'm picturing many single molds just casting singular sections of the bellows, as a hole ring, in a strong latex or flexible resin. Then, joining all those sections together to make the bellows.
Who has more info on the construction of the original?

I was going to make a mold that has enough bellows to make both parts of one arm at once. That will cut down a lot of time in the long run.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

Keep in mind then that whatever you try to mold off of you have to be able to pull your casting off of without ripping it.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

On this picture of the original it looks like the bellow part is made from Latex and the other sleeve part is made from some other rubber.

That is a good shot. That could make construction and mold making easier. You'd still need release agent no matter how you did this.

Re: Back to the Future II 2015 Jacket Build

That is a great shot!

The foot pump says it's measurements are 5x4x4. Should the bellows be a little bigger?

I saw someone suggest those rubber gloves you use in bead blasting chambers and what not. Those might be the way to go since you just incorporate them into the sleeves.

They've made them in other sizes. That was just the first one that came up when I searched for them. It may be a good place to start though.

...and if they no longer make longer sizes: Kid-Sized Jackets! :lol

We would need at least a 7 inch diameter bellow. Maybe even 8 inches.

Try this stuff. I think this is the stuff my friend who taught me swears by. A release agent shouldn't change the color, it should go on clear. You apply it to the item your casting off of. A few light coats is plenty.
