Baby Groot Costume - WIP

Decided to try my hand at making a Baby Groot costume for Halloween. Yes, I'm starting now because it takes me that long to get stuff done. :$ I'm still in the very beginning stages, but I figured that if I post progress here, it will keep me honest in devoting time to it around my other projects to get it done. :) This is my first costume build, so I'm mostly figuring it out as I go.

Humble beginnings:

The pot framing structure in my tiny work area (ignore the extremely misshapen Supernatural Angel Blade handle in the background that was waiting to go back to the lathe):

I've successfully built a wastebasket, just needs the garbage bag:

The rest of the costume practically builds itself once the pot is built, just needs the mask now ;):

I'm not going for perfection, since it's just for my friend's annual Halloween party, but hopefully it will be at least be fun and enjoyed.

Not a lot work on this one this week, mostly focused on my prop projects. But I did get a quick, cheap, and easy shirt for built out of some foam core (still need to shape it a touch more) so I can start building his body. And then got the pebbles/rocks made for the top of the pot. I'm still debating if I'm going to use them or go for a dirt/moss finish to the top. When Rocket is carrying the twig around in the pot, you can see there are pebbles in it, I just don't know if I'm happy with the look since I didn't have the depth available to put the full pebble form in it, just the tops.

I am apparently putting way too much effort into this: http://www.bustle.com/articles/3760...ill-make-you-the-liveliest-part-of-your-party ;)

No pics because I fail and forgot, but I started cutting out the mask portion of it and the pieces that will become the twigs on his head. I need to pick up some more foam mats though, because I only had one on hand and it's just not quite enough. Only been small steps recently but I'm going to get some serious power through time this weekend when I have a couple of my other projects drowning in silicone that I can't do anything with. :)

Scrapped my first go at the mask entirely and started with a new one. Partially because I realized that I'd cut off an area that could be much better utilized in the making of the mask and partially because I'd remembered that the one piece of EVA foam I had sitting around had been scavenged from a booth at SDCC that had left a couple dozen of them after tear down. So I decided that I didn't want to wear five days of SDCC floor and feet on my face.

I'm pretty happy with how it's coming, especially considering it's my very first time ever working with EVA foam. Here it is after the first night. Mostly just cut out and glued together with the top piece, and just a wee bit of heat forming:

Here's where it's at tonight after sanding on the head, forming, and adding the mouth. Still work to be done, but it's going well (though, the heat spots from the gun throw off the cuteness a bit, I think):

And "twigs" waiting to be added to the head:

I went to put the final layer around the pot to smooth everything out from where the foam was glued on and realized that if I added any more width to the top it wouldn't fit through a door frame. :facepalm

Which means I'll be working on pot 2.0 tonight. So no new interesting pics for the next few days, just a re-do of a piece I thought was already sorted. Oh the joys. lol
