Avatar Weapons & Guns

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Welcome Aaron, and thanks for your help !
I can' t wait to see your art work on Avatar :love

Do you have a web site or a blog, where we can see your works ?

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Yes Aaron, WELCOME! and if you can shed light on any "live fire" guns by all means share if and when that is possible.

I imagine what with having designed the guns, all the speculation on our behalf might seem a bit humorous. :)

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Welcome.

I second the others statments and would love to see some of the concept work behind these designs.

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

hey you guys are doing some nice work!
if you got any questions about these guns, i'd be happy to help if i can.
i designed the CARB small arms system (rifles, smg, shotgun etc), the flamethrower, the amp-suit cannon, and a bunch of other military stuff.

i'm hoping to get my artwork and design stuff cleared by the studio for public release. lots of nerdy gun-porn notes and features described on them.

cheers!

I would love to see your artwork from this film(y)thumbsup

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

thanks for the warm welcome!

the artwork that's in the cinefex ad has pretty much the final artwork of the weapons i designed (the pistols were done by others here at weta, the wasp was by steve lambert, and the standard issue pistol by christian pearce).
except the artwork shows the designs as caseless, as they were originally intended. jim wanted casings ejected for dramatic effect however, so the final designs had cased rounds and big ejection ports.

there were a lot of live firing versions made of the carb rifles, shotgun, and wasp pistol. and the carb rifles also had a version where a custom reciprocating mechanism was developed to simulate recoil, muzzle flash, and shell ejection.

the live fire carb weapons had ruger mini 14 mechanisms, and the shotgun used a norinco pump action internal mech.

the CARB system (cellular (originally caseless) ammunition rifle base) was inspired by the LMG11 and the MRC. the design is intended to be a highly modular system, whereby different versions of the weapon are assembled from common parts. theoretically the bare CARB unit (without any foregrip or barrel extension) could be used on its own (not that you'd want to... it'd be a tail heavy and awkward thing). i really had fun designing a lot of tech details that never made it into the film, weapon design is a favourite subject of mine.

the carb rifle base utilises a rotating breech (as the system was originally designed to be a caseless weapon, having the extra complications of cased rounds makes the system less feasible, so i'll refer to the original design now), with a plastic pre-packaged, self powered, disposable, non-reloadable box magazine with transverse stacked rounds in separate columns. the magazine has a built-in e-ink ammunition counter along the bottom edge on each side. the magazines hold 80 rounds of 6.2x35mm ammunition. a variety of modular components can be added, such as different length barrels and underslung 20mm munitions launcher.

the 20mm munitions launcher forms both the underslung launcher (which can fire any number of 20mm tactical rounds, ie: air-burst grenade, tactical buckshot, armour piercing, non-lethal etc...) for the assault rifle CARB variant, or can be used on its own. the shotgun is based around the launcher with modular stock and barrel attachments. there is also an anti-materiel/sniper variant shown in the cinefex ad, which wasn't made for the film, and was just me nerding out.

the flamethrower has a one piece ultra-tough laminated carbon-nanotube reinforced polymer body. this enables the entire body to be storage for the extremely highly compressed fuel and propellant. the extremely rugged body is shatter proof, bullet proof, and ultra durable. it has a flat bottom for easy storage, and was intended to be a tool, rather than a military weapon.

i guess that will do for now, if anyone has any questions, please fire away.
hopefully we'll get the artwork cleared soon too.

i have a website but it's so seriously out of date i won't bother listing the address here,
other than that i have a blog of rough scribbles here: http://skul4aface.blogspot.com/
most of the work i have done in the last 4 years has been for major film projects for weta workshop, so i can't show any of it.
nevermind...

cheers,
aaron

Hey Aaron! Welcome to the RPF!
Do you know if Weta is going to be offering the guns for sale, since they just released the guns from District 9?
Also, do you know if they plan on offering the Na'vi weapons as well?

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Welcome!

Thank you very much for sharing :)

That's fun stuff to read.

We're all looking forward to anything you can tell us or show us from the production. And anything Weta might make & sell in the future :)

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Hey Aaron, great stuuf! Do you by any chance know what the base pistol was for the Wasp? That one has caused quite a bit of debate round here :lol

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Hey Aaron, welcome - I really dig your design work.

I was priveleged to see your weapon designs for Avatar a couple years ago - awesome stuff, and very cool to see them translated verbatim into physical props by the guys in the Workshop.

I gotta say, the Trogdor doodle on the military version flamethrower was truly inspired :lol

They already said they had no plans for Avatar weapons.

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Thanks for the info Aaron.

It's really good to hear from the original designer :thumbsup
Great stuff on the designs.

I know you did not personnally design the RDA standard issue pistol, but do you know anymore details about them?

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Just noticed that Play.com have 4 replica Na'vi daggers available for pre-order / Release date 28/02/10

Seem to be from the Noble Collection (and there is Jewelry!!)

They appear to have:

Jake's Dagger
Neyteri's Dagger
Curved Na'vi Dagger
braided Na;vi Dagger

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Sigh...Noble Collection. It's a shame that they have not recruited any talent from this forum to work on their collections, clearly they need help...and REAL talent.

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Hi Aaron - thanks for joining our nest of nerds! :lol

I would be honored if you took a look at the thread I started to exclusively discuss the WASP:

http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=76202

Even without new eye candy to share, I'd be grateful if you could post there any new insight into the design and base weapon of this iconic prop! Also, please forward the thread link to Steve Lambert. Better yet, if Mr. Lambert would be interested in joining you here, the more the merrier! :)

Cheers!

If the Na'vi are around 10 feet tall, how long do you guys think the Na'vi Chief's ceremonial bow is?

I'm wanting to say it's around 8 feet, but could use more input.:confused

In the" activiste survival guide", it' s written :

Ceremonial / banshee bow : 2.90 meters = 9.5 feet

Harpoon :1.8 meters = 5.9 feet

Arrows : between 1.5 m and 2.5 m = 4.9 f and 8.2 f

Man, that's a huge bow!!!
I'm going to have to find a place in my house to display something that big before I attempt to make it.:confused
