Rylo Sandman flame gun

I have one of Rylo’s terrific working flame guns. This past year, it has developed a malfunction. I’m getting flame (!) coming out in the are I am pointing at above the handle. Has anyone had this happen to theirs? I know these are pretty rare. I had my friend Richard Coyle take it apart but he’s not sure how I can fix this. Any help would be appreciated!

Right? I mean the glow plug is at the end of the barrel but I guess when the flame is ignited, it’s traveling back through the barrel tube and into the guns interior. Somehow. Or maybe the carbide gas is leaking into the interior of the gun and it’s igniting. Maybe I should post a video of me firing it.

When I bought mine from Rylo he included a kit with spare O rings, felt and an injector for the water. Do you still have the spares?

I do, but those are both for the end chamber that hold the calcium carbide. I don't think they are to replace anything on the inside mechanism.

Here’s a video of what is happening. It’s when I release the trigger closing the valve I get the blowback

Looks to me that you are definitely getting leakage from the valve. That valve was custom made and possibly not serviceable.

Anyone have the pictures of the innards? Depending heavily on the source and nature of the leak, Maybe some JB Weld in the right place.

I recommend contacting Rylo here on the RPF for troubleshooting. Like members mentioned you have a leak. Stop firing can either cause further damage or u will get hurt. Possible causes degraded gasket, if u replaced the gaskets may have the wrong type or size. The incredible piece is down to exact specifications and variance’s can lead to problems.

Spoke with Rylo last night, such a great guy. He gave me some troubleshooting ideas. It's most likely an issue with the valve by the trigger. It's similar to what occured on set with the movie guns and is why you can see Michael York holding his very gingerly in the runner chase in Arcade.

Ok here’s the follow up. Rich and I did some test fires with the cover plate on and off. With the plate off, the gun functions normally. With the plate on, it backfires. We think we need to seal the area around the tube where the gas is being expelled.
