re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Thought you lot might like to see this. Having completed a quick build replica of the SMG for a friend of mine, I have done some work on a RDA semi-auto pistol replica over the past few days.

Attached is a quick photo of it's current "in progress" state, that I thought you guys might like to see, it is taken with my not so great phone camera so excuse the far from brilliant photo quality.
It is my intention eventually to mould it and the holster ( the "vicegrip" branded type ) which I am also working on, for casting.

Please ignore the fact that it's a rather nasty shade of green that's just a basecoat to see what needed sanding etc. it will be painted to match those shown in the prop display photos, eventually. There are some tweeks I still need to make to the pistol, but overall it's not far from done, construction wise.

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Heck, that looks great!

Show us the SMG! :lol

The SMG was commissioned by a friend of mine who wanted one after seeing the film for the first time. Reference material was a little thin prior to this build and both cost and time were a major factor so some liberties / artistic license was taken with a few of the details in order to produce it quickly and cheaply for him, but anyway...

It is built up completely from ABS and Styrene sheets, mainly laminated together and sanded to shape.
This is the only photo I have at the minute ( taken on my phone cam )until some better shots can be taken with a decent camera.
When this pic was taken the small detail peice behind the large round muzzle had not yet been attached and you can't really make out the graphics detail on the mag.

Since more reference images have been posted here and online elsewhere I have noticed a few details that are "off" that I would have liked to change, but as I say it was a relatively quick build, as the customer "required" it asap.

I am still working on finishing the RDA pistol at the momment, then I'll be having a crack at the gripvice holster shortly.

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Light on references or not, that's pretty bitchin'. :)

Thanks for sharing.

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Any mention of what guns they used inside the AR's and SMG's ?

Looking at the live fire SMG pic I'm vaguely reminded of the mini14 action but I'm not sure .

From the pics released so far it appears they only made the SMG variant of the rifle, as a live fire version, and possible did not have any full length firing ones. All the full length rifles seen in pics / screen captures have the smaller ejection port of the none firing props. Which would make sense as the SMG is the version that features the most in close up firing shots, such the Col. Quatrich scene and the "firing line" shots.

It does look like the action for the firing version could be based around the ruger mini14 or AC556 though, judging by the cocking handle shown.

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Hears a more recent pic of the PDW rifle replica from the client, with the painted Mantanza Arms Corp logos, and the painted up RDA pistol replica.

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Looking at the shotgun there might be a real pump gun under there as well I see a slot above the rear 'bullpup' grip of the SG unit that looks like a shell loader slot... I wasn't paying attention enough to tell if there were live fire shots of the shotgun.

There are some shots of one of the actors firing a shotgun prop in front of a green screen in one of the behind the scene videos, so I think that you are correct.

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

I would love to try to make some of those at some point. I have tried making receivers for guns before but never got to far into it.

But I am surprised at the number of pictures you guys could find too!

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

What you did with that SMG is just amazing. The design of that gun always kinda bugged me though.... it looks like it's cut in half and there's a whole section missing. :lol

I can see what you mean. Essentially the design is just that, they simply removed the whole front section of the longer rifles and added the large muzzle / flash hider assembly.

Being a bullpup layout, it still have a barrel of reasonable length though; somewhere around 10-11" and the addition of the front grip would aid in holding it on target when firing.

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

Only problem is, it doesn't have enough room to actually function. Seems to be a common mistake in film/game design when it comes to bullpups.

re: Avatar Weapons & Guns

hey you guys are doing some nice work!
if you got any questions about these guns, i'd be happy to help if i can.
i designed the CARB small arms system (rifles, smg, shotgun etc), the flamethrower, the amp-suit cannon, and a bunch of other military stuff.

i'm hoping to get my artwork and design stuff cleared by the studio for public release. lots of nerdy gun-porn notes and features described on them.

cheers!
