Rylo Sandman flame gun

I can do this for you if you want :D :D :D

Are you under 30? ;)

I'll have to see how my stash of calcium carbide has held up. Last time I checked a lot of it had turned to dust. Didn't realize it degrades over time. I thought I had it sealed up pretty good.

LOL......sadly NO......old enough to have watched the show on TV at the time it was aired here :) :)

Maybe if the CC is dust / powder, melting it with water should do the job, no ? Maybe add a little bit more than usual.....

Ok here’s the follow up. Rich and I did some test fires with the cover plate on and off. With the plate off, the gun functions normally. With the plate on, it backfires. We think we need to seal the area around the tube where the gas is being expelled.
I think with the plate on the leak in the valve is allowing the gas to accumulate in the cavity. With the plate off, the gas just dissipates and can’t ignite.

How diesel fuel works occurred to me. "Acetylene will not explode under low pressure at normal temperatures. However, it becomes unstable and spontaneously combustible when compressed to a pressure over 15 psi. Beyond 29.4 psi, it becomes self explosive, and a slight shock may cause it to explode even in the absence of air or oxygen."

Best of luck and keep us posted. I just got mine out but haven't checked the calcium carbide can's contents yet. I put o-ring lube on the tank's o-rings to keep them in good shape since I can't find my spares. The threaded brass piece with the long gas tube connected to it is "frozen" to the firing chamber...I've tried heat and WD-40 but no luck getting that piece to unscrew...and the brass is so soft that I'm messing it up. I should've stored it in pieces... I may need to contact Rylo for a replacement. Thanks for reminding me of his name.

Flame Gun Perfection!

Wow, I haven’t seen Cliff post in a looong time. M-Pire i used to drool over pics of your ANH Kenobi saber back in the day, and thanks for keeping the RPF afloat along with Nikki.

OMG, you have an amazing memory! Thank you so much - I really appreciate that!!! All my best
I was a young’un when I lurked/joined, mid twenties. lol
All the prop builds you’ve posted have been a feast for the eyes, and I’m glad you popped up so I can tell ya.
My best to you and yours brother.

Thank you so much, Apollo! You guys really are THE BEST!!!

Apologies to the OP JediDunn for the slight hijack; but I really enjoyed hearing from everyone here and in messages. :)

I was able to flatten two sides of the double-threaded brass connector with the two o-rings and the gas tube with my dremel, and then I was able to use a box wrench to break it free from the firing chamber. My calcium carbide was still in good shape, not sure why, and so I did a test fire after cleaning the filter and so far so good, no leaks for me, but I will continue watching this thread for more info and insight. Best of luck to you, JediDunn!

Cheers!

Just wanted to circle back and report gun is fixed! Richard Coyle determined flame was traveling back into the gun through holes around the barrel tube. He used a flame resistant material to pack off that area and that solved it. I also gave the gun a fresh paint job.

I hope you used heat resistant paint on it.
