Avatar reviews - Attention : spoilers

Re: Avatar reviews

I am fairly well versed (and experienced) In most Film production and FX techniques - Both practical and CGI - but I found myself saying "how?? How have they done this?"
I haven't seen anything groundbreaking in terms of what they did.. it's a lot of the same stuff they used on LOTR, for both performance capture as well as the "virtual camera" environment. Unless you're referring to something different.. hehe. I haven't seen the film yet. :)

Well, it would.. alphabetical order and all.. :ninja

Re: Avatar reviews

I don't do that anymore. I don't go to movies HOPING to like them, because I almost always end up disappointed. I go in either with no expectations,

I took that approach for LOTR, because it was hugely important to me. Zero expectations - a longtime Jacko fan from the schlock horror stuff, but was he the right man for THAT job? I didn't know. He made a beautiful film, I came out of the cinema in that happy lost-in-it state, and that was a very good day.

This is an 'original' (ahem) story that I have no pre-existing investment in. I've followed the making-of controversies and hoo-ha, and been prepared to go either way from day one. But it'd be nice if this truly is another classic. It'd make 2009 a landmark year for SF cinema, at any rate.

Eh, the positive reviews could all be coming from the same people who kept telling me how good Voyager was. :p But on balance, the evidence at this point suggests a little excited anticipation may not be unreasonable optimism, after all. I won't be giving myself over to that so much that I'll be crushed if it doesn't pay off. And excited anticipation can be its own reward, in moderation.

Re: Avatar reviews

I saw it on Thursday with a group of press members, and everyone, even one of the most critical press members in this area, had good things to say about this movie. The only negative remark was that the story seemed like a retread of a few other movies.
But the movie on a whole was amazing. I did my best to stay away from any spoilers or speculation about the movie, I wanted to go into it without any pre formed bias.
I am seeing it again this Thursday with other members of the press and the public, and even at the 2 hour and 40 minute run time, I am looking forward to it.

There was no "performance capture" in LOTR. In most shots Andy Serkis was filmed with the other characters on set then painted out and replaced with a meticulously keyframe animated Gollum. Even when mocap was used it was just mocap. The face (and most of the time the hands and feet) were animated. And a virtual camera was used in one sequence for previsualising the set and camera moves not for actually "filming" the movie. King Kong did, however, use performance capture but not on the same scale as Avatar.

Re: Avatar reviews

Jedi2016-
The scale to which the virtual environments were generated has also never been achieved -not even close. Throw in the stereo aspect and it is quite a milestone.

Jon-
Some of those aerial jungle shots blew me away. I have never seen anything like it. Hats off to Rosenbaum and crew.

Re: Avatar reviews

You know, when revolutionary new tech comes out, it's only a few years before it becomes common enough to show up in commercials and whatnot...

...I give it a decade before we start to see motion capture, freaky alien porn. I mean, where else is there for the adult industry to go? If there's something that hasn't been filmed, I can't think of it.

Not to get off topic, but the post above about the Navi boobs made me think that.

Let it be of record....

I had a thing for "Taun We" when I saw AOTC.

She was hawt. :lol

Re: Avatar reviews

I've only seen the trailers and not read any reviews so take this with a grain of salt.

The humans seem very Weyland Corp. which is interesting because they were all about profit and bottom-line in the Aliens series. But here in Avatar they've found something rarer and more valuable than extraterrestrial life was in Aliens.

Me, I'm a huge Battletech fan (Which was inspired by a ton of the Cameron aesthetic, hell one of the vehicles IS the APC from Aliens) so the mechs are a big plus for me. I think this movie will be almost like Battletech vs. Fern Gully. But gotta say it's refreshing to see the humans as the kick-*** technology wielding aliens invading for once.

The thing I almost know will let me down the most, I want the humans to win. Gotta root for my home team after all.:lol

Maybe the movie will surprise me...

Re: Avatar reviews

I'd love to eat some crow after seeing this show... really, I would. But I'm not counting on it. Yeah, sure, it's been getting lots of great reviews, but so did Star Trek. Enough said.

I'm seeing it with 150 members of the Digital team on Wednesday, so I'm interested in hearing what they have to say about it. But yes, I'll eat crow if I have to. :thumbsup

I just came out of watching Avatar (In Dolby 3D) at the Empire, Leicester Sq and
I feel like someone just played a trick on me. I feel like an old person who
Cluelessly watches a child program a VCR!

Wow. I am looking foward to seeing this too. This review; short, positive, and spoiler free, by one who is just confounded at how good it is, is just what I need to go in with a smile, and gives me hopes of walking out with one too! :)
