AT-AT diorama - FINISHED PAGE 6!!!

Re: AT-AT diorama WIP

That is looking really good.

Hey - can you paint my MR AT AT?

Tell me more about the color pastels and how you used them please.

Re: AT-AT diorama WIP

I don't know about a MR AT AT, I'd be a little worried about messing it up! Also, it would cost a fortune to ship it wouldn't it?

My basic technique with all of this painting is to keep everything water-based. Acrylic primer, artist's acrylics for all airbrushing, and then pastel/water mixture. You want to be more or less happy with the acrylic airbrushing before you move on to the pastels. I kept putting layer after layer of acrylics on with my airbrush, lightening and darkening until it all looked right, and then I could go a bit crazier with the pastels because they were the only layer that could be removed.

Have a look at this video - it is a good example of the technique I use to add my pastel filters:

Re: AT-AT diorama WIP

I think it is very good and I bet it didn't take you 2 and a half years!

2 1/2 years! :eek

I was about insane when mine took 7 months.

That's some patients right there, worthy of some sort of sainthood or something.
You can really tell you put alot of work into them, they look awesome.
Almost makes me want to pick some up myself, maybe after the move.

Seriously nice job!

Re: AT-AT diorama WIP

Hey, glad to see you back Danakin! Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'll soon be starting the tiniest figures in history to flesh out this scene...

Re: AT-AT diorama WIP

Thanks everyone! - Jun, the Diorama is going to be about 50 cm x 60 cm. I'm currently waiting on an acrylic case

Re: AT-AT diorama WIP

Just sensational, mate! The detail, the way the AT-AT's LOOK like proper ESB miniatures, everything!

Re: AT-AT diorama WIP

Let the madness continue: Nearly done with all of the painting, just got the F-Toys snowspeeders to repaint (and hang with the most invisible magician's thread available on the market, oh and I'll put figures in them too) perhaps modify a couple of Taun-Tauns from the ERTL 'Battle of Hoth action scene kit' and then I'll start to put this all together.

I'm getting a custom made acrylic case this weekend so will be able to plan out the composition and really get this thing somewhere near completed over the next few weeks. I need it to be ready for the start of May as I'll be exhibiting it at the Star Wars Fan Fun Day in Burnley, UK. If anyone else would like to exhibit their props or models PM me for more details. - This year there will be a lot more exhibition space. Trust me, this will be a great event!

^ Turrets now painted, with a trooper poking his head out of one of them. I'm going to dare myself to smash one of these with a chisel to create that 'just been shot' look.

This gun emplacement is a heavily modified piece from the ERTL Battle of Hoth action scene. The scale of the whole kit is allegedly is supposed to be about 1/144 - 1/160 but I think it holds up fine to 1/100

^ Again, troops from the Battle of Hoth action scene. They are just about the right size... perhaps a tiny bit small, but it should add to the scale of the scene. I've painted about 20 of these figures, holding my breath with each brushstroke to keep my hand steady! These are stupidly small, but I managed to paint in the green goggles on most of them ;)

^ Really pushing my Macro to its limit. The sticks are regular cocktail sticks/toothpicks to give an indication of how tricky these buggers are to paint. My eyes may never fully recover!

More updates soon! Feeling excited about finishing it now.
