Asst. Supt. Aaron costume (Alien 3)

The keychain:

We see that Mr. Aaron wears a locking carabiner on his belt, with an attached chain. This apparently was for keys which are never seen in the film. But the carabiner and chain are seen a few times.

Does anyone know what carabiner was used, and maybe also some detail on the chain? I have some carabiners picked out for possible purchase but have not done so yet.

I also have a chain and key rings but I think the style of the chain is wrong.

I plan to make some “futuristic” keys for the chain, which ride in the pocket. But I’d like to get the chain and carabiner right, or, as close as possible at least.

Any help is appreciated!
Hi, I used this carabiner for my build. Was the closest I found when I looked a good while back. Hope it helps!

Looks similar to what I ended up with.

Mine's steel actually. I doubt he had a steel one but that looked closer than others I found.

Picked up my jacket yesterday. Not an exact replica because it’s clear the actor wore a smaller size than the XL that I have.

Spacing is slightly off from screen used, because the field between pocket and button above is wider on this jacket.

Deliberately set this patch “off” the seam as the screen used jacket was.

Overall, I think it’s pretty convincing. Patches are weathered a bit more than these bright light pictures would lead one to believe… I also have some “close” pants but am not planning to invest in the 20-eye boots at this time. I have all the other elements of the outfit.

Looking really good, it's coming together now!

The patches do look rather pristine, but in person you can see they are "softened" and "dirty". I did them prior to being sewn on.

But more wouldn't hurt!

Hi, making my own version of this (going for the Ripley variant) and have a vintage jacket on order. Was wondering how you went about removing the fur lining from the jacket before I try and mess it up by mistake? Cheers!

Hi, your only removing the fur trim from edge of hood.

Hi, The fur around the edge of the hood unpicks pretty easily. You will see when your jacket arrives where it is attatched, just use a thread ripper tool and go carefully.

I wanted to do this costume like 5 years ago and just had no luck at all researching. Thanks so much for collecting all the information in one place!

Ordered the patches and OG-106 cap today.

Gonna keep looking for an older N-2B, hopefully without the modern shiny/synthetic look.

And might just buy a new pair of the boots and wear them around for a few months to break them in.

I'm not too worried about the other incidentals like the belt and shirt once I've got all the main bits.

Got most of the stuff for my costume. Still waiting on the pants and custom W-Y patch for the hat to arrive (none of the premade ones are as accurate as I'd like). Still have to dye the hat and currently breaking in the boots with the blisters to prove it.

Was going over the movie for some more reference stills and saw that there are actually 2 chains connected to his carabiner (you can see the 2 rings on the carabiner), one to the unseen keys that go in his pocket, and another really short chain to what looks like.. a large pair of nail clippers?

Anyone have any idea what the thing on the short chain actually is (between his fingers in this still)?

I actually have a large pair of nail clippers that look almost identical to this so for now that's what I've got on the short chain, heh.

Not sure what those are but the actor was asked one time and his answer was “keys”.

I’ve never seen this second item before now. Are there more stills that show it?

This is the only scene I could find that showed it off (this is just a photo of the Blu Ray paused at that moment). And this is the best angle, unfortunately; he moves to put his hand on his hip and his coat covers it until it's pushed back so you don't see the transition/any more detail.

As far as I can tell the "nail clippers" are on a very short chain, and the keys are on the long dangling chain that leads to his pocket, and then both are connected to the same carabiner.

How about a whistle? Any matches there?

Seems like a plausible item for a guard to have, like the keys.

Hrm. Hadn't thought of that. I looked online and there are prison guard whistles, but to my eyes it doesn't quite match what I see in that scene, the thing doesn't look round.

The other weird thing is how the chain for whatever it is is so short. You wouldn't be able to lift it to your face without unclipping it from the carabiner.

Anyways, been working on my costume to have it ready for a Saturday night Halloween party at work.

Got a pair of close enough Demonia 20 eye boots, got the jacket, got the patches, got the hat and dyed it (still a bit more green that I'd like, but whatever), got the belt, got a fairly close carabiner and chain and keys, got the mock turtleneck (haven't done the Weyland Yutani logo on it yet, would like to even though I don't plan on taking off the coat while in costume). And I already had the knee high grey socks for under the boots.

The hardest part by far is the pants.

I bought a pair of olive green sweatpants/joggers off eBay then I bought a second pair for extra matching material. It's a little darker than what they used on screen, but the pants in the movie appear radically different depending on the lighting.

I haven't attempted to sew anything like this before.

Anyways, using the close up prop reference photos from here, I cut out and sewed the knee pads and the external pockets (I kept the original internal pockets cause undoing that side seam and removing them would have been a huge headache but also without any rear pockets I figured having 4 front pockets could be useful for like my phone and stuff) and removed the rear pocket that came with the pants. Sewed the cincher/lacing thing for the back and added grommets to it.

The part I tried to figure out tonight is the weird ruched waistband thing. I think that may be beyond my skills because I'd like to keep the pocket edge liner transition to the bottom half of the fringe (it's subtle, but visible in the prop photos), but also you have to sew the entire thing while the waistband is stretched and I just don't think I can keep track of the lengths/get everything to line up.

So I may just accept defeat and just not include that part (I'm obsessed enough that later on I may pay someone to make me a pair from scratch that are more screen accurate).

But yeah, here are the results:
