Assassin's Creed series costume projects (AC3 tomahawk on 6-1-12 -page 6)

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-16 update)

oooh this looks like it might be AMAZING! What fabrics are you planning to use? You're going to so much detail with he armour i'd love to see authentic fabrics used - accurate to the period, like silks and wools. I swear one of his armour sets in ACB - the drechen i think, his collar looks like its heavily embroidered silk.

Though it would be nice, my main focus on this one is to look the part, and have easy to maintain outfits that I could just toss in the washer! The costs are also too high unfortunately, especially with some of those silks. So if i can find a close enough alternative fabric thats easier to care for, and cheaper, I'll be going with that instead. The leather bits will be leather though.

@fevereon- it continues to look awesome....and I'm actually considering heading back to my project, I've dropped a lot of weight since I was doing that before and the revelations suit is slowly growing on me (it was the e3 trailer that did it I think)
Awesome! I went and assumed it would grow on me like all of the other outfits, so I figured i might as well start anyway. The trailer just sealed the deal!

So here's the last few days ' work!

ACR stuff-

I did a test embroidery, with the pattern on the tip of the hood. I can't say I like how it turned out, but I think it'll get better with time, since there's a LOT of it to do for this costume project. Still trying to decide whether I'll so with this design for the beak of the hood, or the other one that I've been seeing in the trailer/game.

I was still unhappy with the fabric that I had, because besides it being blue instead of the gray that I was ideally wanting, also found that some of the refs showed the fabric itself having a texture. I liked that much more.

A friend reminded me of a local fabric store that carries TONS of different fabrics, and I found a wonderful grey fabric that has a weaved design in it. I did a dye test with some royal blue, and it came out the exact color I wanted (on left). The middle one was soaked a little longer, and the right is some other fabric that I'll add into the outfit too add variation. The purpleish swatch was the earlier attempt to redye the other fabric.

Black dyes tend to have a habit of not being truly black, but some mix of other dark colors. If you try and dye it lighter than black, it'll show (in the case of Rit dyes, black leans very heavily on the purple side :p

Today I'll be working on drawing up the embroidery designs, and as soon as i can find my buck a yard fabric, continue layout of the acb tunic, and start the acr one.

Re: fev's Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-20 update)

very impressive work, i'm more than a little jelly.

do you have a good build for the character also?

Re: fev's Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-20 update)

That embroidery was great :O I love it!

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-20 update)

you're fine, the build is good, and screw it, if you like the character, do the costume. I think you look enough of the part, and the costume is so amazing, no one is going to doubt you.

Nice Hidden Blades ^^

The stupid trigger for mine still eludes me and I'm trying to make Altair's still.
(Don't have the proper metal cutting tools.)

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-20 update)

I think the part of this thread that I envy the most is that, unlike most members of the RPF, you can both sculpt and sew. For some reason a lot of us seize up when presented with items that require use of a sewing machine instead of a bandsaw and some Smoothcast 300.

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-20 update)

This thread makes me want to cry a little bit, just because I was starting to love my AC:B costume. Now I feel inferior.

GREAT JOB! PLEASE keep us updated!

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-20 update)

Hi GG! Yur thread help inspire me to get off my bum and get to work on my gears. I really like the variant that you did, I hadn't considered integrating a corset into the outfit, and it came together really nice!

Ackro- whoo, sewing is like a thorn in the side over here.. or more like needles in the fingers.. My home is in sculpting, building, etc, but these projects force me to do things that i wouldn't otherwise do, and its a great chance to discover new media & crafts (like leatherworking! OMG)

Neo- if i was *that* concerned, i wouldn't be costuming the characters I've been doing. They all DO tend to be white hoodied bada**es though. eh,. its a weak point.

More blueprinting was done today, cleaned up the designs for the ACR tunic, finished up and aligned the ACB tunic pattern (you can see it on the chest, and all over the trim..) Apologies for no photos.. they'll be up tomorrow!

I'm taking a break and will be working on layout of the ACR gear, and & maybe sewing this evening. Five weeks before the next convention! rushrushrush!

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-20 update)

Well, now I feel slightly more special! Though now I need to get off my arse and try to make mine look as good as yours. XD

haha, at least you didn't run out of the good stuff and have to make yours outta bed sheet and then see this. ^^

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-20 update)

today i'm battling the hood, which has been the toughest part to get right. I really liked robo's idea of pepping it, but since i don't know diddly about 3d i hoofed it by taping a general shape together, drawing the seams on there, cutting them out, and tracing them onto fresh paper and assembling. Then repeating the process to tweak it.

When its done, I'll scale it up and do a sewn mockup.

Silly me started in full scale using scrap foam a friend of mine gave me, since she works at a printer who normally tosses the stuff..., then realized that it might be a better idea to do it smaller to waste less material

this is the third assembly, and will need to do it again, because i messed up the middle panels :p

Fevereon, first off. Great Work! I'm in awe of your complete mastery of sculpting! I wish I had the patience to do that kind of intenstive work!
The Layouts for the hood look very good, I would imagine that the Are for the AC:R costume?

In one of your pictures of the left pauldron..there was a large picture of Ezio, one shot of him in front, and the other of a shot of him from behind...where did you i find such large photographs? They are in the Strategy guide..but they are nowhere that large.
Could you post the link? Kindly?

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-22 updates pg.2 )

Jeff- Thanks, man! regarding the refs, the front and back images are from the strategy guide, and I had scanned them in at 300 dpi i believe. you can blow them pretty decent for printed refs though. I have a page that has the primary references I used for the project here, and just updated it, because I apparently forgot to post the link for the image :
Props by fev - Ezio Cosplay project (Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood) - References

Today was another hood day.. I cut apart the mini hood, and scanned it. After a quick adjustment to outline the templates on photoshop, i used a great program called PosteRazor to chop up the images on multiple pages, since i don't have a large format printer (just an old school 8 1/2 x 11).
hoodpile.jpg

I wound up making two of these.. the first one was the wrong size :p It was further modified.
hoodtaped.jpg

Once I liked the design, It was transferred onto a foam material that a friend of mine has a ton of from her job. theres a little more tweaking to do in the back, but I'm completely happy with this for once (i always hated the other hoods)

aaand back to embroidery layout.. 33 days left!

MOAR :D I'm so hooked on this thread :D

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-23 updates pg.2 )

Wow, those pieces look stunning. Your patterning work looks fantastic, as well. Like everyone else, can't wait to see this completed!

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-23 updates pg.2 )

Hi guys, sorry it took so long to post an update on this, and much thanks everyone for looking and the kind comments!

I usually don't like to post unless I have some more WIPs to show, . but I just finished compiling some images to share :)

Tis been a solid week of tedium, drawing up more embroidery patterns and the like...

Also began laying out the tunic for the ACR gear.. it seems to have gone back to its AC1 roots.. sortof... or maybe not. its a hot mess to be honest. I decided to make a full length undertunic, with the second one that'll go over it. one thing's for sure though, this is one VERY asymmetrical outfit.

Because of time being a big factor, I'll be tentatively using the Assassin's logo on the front of the tunic, but if i have the time, I'll do the Masayaf logo instead. I really prefer the latter...

So without further ado, photos! Unfortunately, i boffed the size of the embroidery pattern, but I actually remembered to take photos this time, so yay...

I decided to line the inside of the hood with a blue fabric. Unfortunately, I realized that the coarse weave fabric that I liked was some kind of acrylic, which would be better suited for outdoor furniture or something similar. I ran to Joanns, and found at least a similar color. This was sewn together, turned inside out, and i ran along the edge with a stitch to flatten it out, making sure it would be hidden by the next stitch.
hoodsew1.jpg

I used a zigzag stitch to do a sort of decorative "overlock" stitch along the edge. a friend recommended using wax paper to prevent the curling that can happen, especially on curves, but i adapted it a bit as to keep it from getting stuck in the stitching., apparently water soluble stabilizer would work nice too, but I'm a bit broke atm. I'll go back and handstitch the corners and other areas that are uneven.
ghettooverlock.jpg

Since I would be transferring the designs i drew onto dark fabric, i tried out some method i saw online elsewhere while researching embroidery.. I used a pin and poked holes along the edge of the design
embroiderytransferpoke.jpg

and after checking it to make sure i have the whole outline done
embroiderytransferpokeback.jpg

i took a little ball of fabric and transferred it to the fabric by dabbing the pattern with talcum powder. it got into the holes nicely
embroiderytransferpowder.jpg

after tracing it over with an ink pen (the lines will be covered anyways) the powder was easily swatted off
embroideryready.jpg

instead of using an embroidery ring, I stapled the fabric onto a spare photo frame made of a relatively soft wood. I haven't had much luck with rings, and the fabric kept getting loose.
embroideryframe.jpg

Since i have to do it over, (and a lil' pattern adjustment) I'll do the other design that you see in the trailer and in in-game (instead of the Game informer cover promo image)

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-30 updates pg.2 )

Can I just say that you are TOO GOOD AT THIS! Love it! I only wish I had 1% of your sewing skills.

Re: Assassin's Creed series costuming projects (6-30 updates pg.2 )

Lovely choice of fabric. I totally understand budgets and i think you have found a happy medium. the patterned fabric is beautiful. I also want to commend you on your embroidery, so many just paint the patterns on, embroidering the design will only add to this wonderful costume!

Ive always felt the assassin's hoods far more rigid than a hood in reality. It never falls back when the assassin jumps, or if there is a wind (being high up on those eagle view points it must be windy!) So many hoods of this costume ive seen, had the right shape in the pattern but not when worn. I was wondering if you had some of that foam inbetween the fabric and lining, it would keep the shape when worn? Just a thought i had when i saw the foam you were working the pattern out with.

Yeah, with the AC2 costume, I painted the griffons on, because in the closeup images of the tails, the texture it was clearly fabric, as though it was printed or bleached somehow. The collar was embroidered in the images, and I had to cheat it by painting them, and hated it :p There's no way this can be cheated, and would look HORRID in paint.. a good time to learn a lil about embroidery anyways :)

And thanks! Completely forgot to add a lining to stiffen the hood a bit. Doing that now!

I wouldn't trust the foam in the washer & dryer (where i intend to stick it when cleaning) so I'm going with a fusible interfacing. It wound up crinkling something terrible on the AC2 gear, but this time I'm fusing it to the -inside- lining of the outfit, instead of the side that is facing outwards. If it crinkles, it shouldn't really affect the outer layer.

if anyone spots anything buggy, or other suggestions, lemme know, and thank you!
