Art Asylum/Diamond Star Trek TOS Communicator, TOS Tricorder, WOK phaser at Toy Fair

Re: Art Asylum/Diamond Star Trek TOS Communicator, TOS Tricorder, WOK phaser at Toy F

If AA can put out a full sized tricorder with bell & whistles for $30, it'll be the greatest achievement in toy history:) I really hope it's true....

If only these kinds of things were possible in 1974.
I would have probably passed out!

Better late then never.

I guess it's too late to run around the backyard on landing party missions though.

Not without getting divorced anyways!

So, in the absence of any "hands on" previews, what's everyone's preliminary opinions on modding it?

Hopefully it's just held together with a few screws, in which case disassembling would be easy. Some pale gold paint on the speaker mesh should help, along with a light sanding of the shell to reduce perception of the incorrect texture direction and most obviously the gloss.

The moire looks different in each pic in the first row, but the last one looks to be a close match to the pic from a similar angle, supporting the "hologram" moire idea as opposed to a genuine spinning version. I can't think of any easy way to handle that, especially if the moire turns out to be the speaker.

Should just be a matter of trimming/painting some styrene and cutting a slot into the shell for the midplate between the hinges.

Also, it bugs me that the "knobs" recess into the control panel as opposed to being somewhat raised and pushing against it.

I still can't wait to find out what the antenna is constructed of!

You could likely make a new mic plate and redo the knobs with actual TJet hubs. I think the only problem to solve is the distance that the knows need to be pushed down to close the switch contacts.

It looks like it will be just about the same as the STTE comm inside. If it is laid out about the same you may have to change how the switch is activated to fit the top bar between the hinges. Although you may be able to cut slots in the bar to allow the lid stop and switch cam to turn, it would be fairly close.

I actually had that written up, but when I realized I had no clue where to find them I deleted that part before posting. Do you have a source for the wheel hubs?

And as far as I can see, it looks like they got the proper look and orientation for the mic material (at least close enough for me) it is just the color that bugs me.

Still, I'm getting it for $20, it's a steal as-is!

EDIT: HeroComm has an eBay link for replica hubs. I'm sure some modifications will be in order if I want them to fit and still operate properly, but I'm sure they won't be any real difficulty seeing as how such a small part will make such a large difference.

And the great news is, we'll have them on the market for the next six years! :lol

No Doubt :lol If just the electronics are really good on it you could not go wrong buying a bunch of them. I can not tell from the pics, is this skinnier than the STTE comm?

Regards the buttons, I never understood why (on the Vegas and now the AA) they make it so you have to push the whole button into the panel. Seems like only the central pillar of the button should push in, with the outer rim remaining in place. Just a thought.

In any case the buttons as they are now, stick out too far compared to how the T-Jet hubs should look.

Well, the outer rim is supposed to float slightly above the surface anyway, which is why I mentioned that the buttons should be pressed against the surface of the panel and not into it. I think that would better keep the aesthetic of the original Comms.

Re: Art Asylum/Diamond Star Trek TOS Communicator, TOS Tricorder, WOK phaser at Toy F

Very, very cool! If the antenna grid is plastic, that's just waiting to break. But all the metal phaser parts were plastic.... Doesn't bode well.

Any idea if AA is going to reissue the classic phasers any time soon? I have a few.... But I wouldn't mind having a half dozen, ala Galileo 7. And I'd prefer to not pay ebay prices.

The AA TOS phasers are available NOW, I just saw them the other day at Forbidden Planet it New York.

Probably also available from New Force Comics online, that's where I go for my online Trek toy fix. :cool

There have been like seven different repaints of the AA phaser, but you may have to pay collector prices for some of them (ala the White Handled version). Me, I would just buy whatever is cheapest. If you need accuracy, just paint it later.

I had the replicas from Diamond in my hands this past Monday, modding any of them should not be a problem. I was very impressed with the Communicator, both in looks and sound which was loud and very clear, way better than the STE Comm sound. It chirps, has the incoming sound, 2 part "moving" moire, and pre-recored dialog from the show. The WOK Phaser was also VERY nice and lit up just like the original in every way. The Tricorder and medical scanner on display appeared to be prototypes but if they follow what they had there everyone's dreams just may have come true. :)

So is the flip grill antenna metal or plastic?

Do you know if it sounded at least equal in quality to the the MR comm?
If it is good enough, Might be worth the guts swap to get some dialog out of the MR comm.

Lots of people in the showroom but the sound seemed good, not sure if it was as good as MR but it was way better than the STE. It was loud compared to the MR.
