I'm in the market to pick up an Art Asylum Communicator and Phaser. Is there a preferred version out there? I saw Entertainment Earth has a communicator exclusive, but Diamond Select has a 2 pack of both. Is the EE Communictor better in any way?

The EE Exclusive Comm has a gold lid, and the others are sort of bronze looking.

The quality of these 2 items has dropped off. If you're looking to collect, I would go with the older versions, The older the better. The quality of the new versions or recent production, are just not up to par for the phaser and the comm.

If you want a solid all around phaser, I would search Ebay for the Gray with Black handle original, or second release phaser. These were the best phasers AA/DST had made. They go for about 20-35 dollars.

For the communicator, try to get one with a metal lid. The recent output has comms with plastic lids.

I found a plastic lid comm. today at TRU.....Now I'm afraid to even order a comm. off the internets. (Same goes for the phasers, I don't know squat about them, but I'd like to get the best. )

The first AA release (2003) of the phaser was in a red box, they switched them
to a black design after that.

I would buy phasers that come in the box pictured first. This was the first and second release of the phasers. They are also made a whole lot better than the newer ones.

As far as the comes. I haven't seen the new boxes yet, but I've heard that they've changed it. The comms that I have came in a black box that's similar to the 40th anniversary Trek boxes in the above link.

Here's my AA/DST EE-exclusive comm, modified with an aluminum bezel (fashioned from hard drive platter spacing rings) and new Moire disks.

This is a great comm for the money.

Are the dimensions of the AA tricorder the same as the original screen used prop?

They're the same size as the HMS version of the tricorder, which is very close but not exactly the same as the original 60s prop. Of course, we're talking about something like being an 1/8 of an inch too tall, not miniature like the Playmates version. It is easily the most accurate of all of the Diamond Select TOS prop-toys.

I've got a couple Playmates trics that a bought a long time ago, and never opened them until recently. I couldn't believe how small they are. What a waste of money.
