Art Asylum / Diamond Select TOS Phaser build with metal parts.

Tony shipped out my parts today so it is possible I get to start on my first upgrade this weekend!! Oh joy! Rapture! ...said the Scarecrow.

Have you ever done something and then thought.....I probably shouldn't have done that?

It's the thought that went through my mind after I disassembled the P1. :facepalm

That being said, I would like to seal up the outer battery access as I have seen several of you do. Since the other side of the battery compartment (on the inside of the P1) is closed, how do you get to your batteries? Did you open this closed side up to get to the batteries? Any tips would be appreciated.

Y'all are inspiring me to pull my phasers out to add metal bits to 'em.

Duncanator welcome aboard!

Delta Vega once you seal up the back cover the only way to get access to the batteries will be from the inside. I asked the master AA builder (Tony) how it was done a long time ago and he was generous enough to share his wisdom with me. :) The plastic inside that area has to be cut out so you can access the batteries from the inside.

Thanks Spacerone! I had some time to look closer at things this evening and realized that I was going to have to open up things a bit so the batteries could be inserted that way.. I have not started that part yet but I did begin removal of the fins on the top portion. May get to finish that up tomorrow and do some sanding and test fitting of new parts. It's a good thing I have more than 1 of these things....will need one just to see how it goes back together.

Radio shack used to be a good place to pick up things like LED's and so forth. My local store is sorely lacking in that kind of thing. Was very disappointed. I might as well order everything online.

Thought I'd post an update on my phaser build so far.

This is my P1 bottom half with interior battery compartment now accessible and trigger ridge sanded away. I've test fitted the new firing nozzle and trigger. Fits nice.

Both sections sanded with side ribs removed with new trigger and nozzle being test fit.

I still have much to do. May hit it with some high grit sand paper for smoothing. Still need to scribe in the lower section seam and some filling and sanding to do. If you see something I missed, let me know.

Looks like it's coming along nicely. The trigger area was sanded down perfectly. You will also need to trim a little off the old rubber trigger with a sharp razor. Go slowly though and trim a little at a time until it is shortened just right. If you take too much off it won't work correctly. I made that mistake once.:(

Thanks spacerone! It has been an adventure so far and it is really thanks to all the people that have participated in this thread and shared their builds, pictures, tips, and ideas. Thanks for the idea on the trigger trim. I did go ahead and order some zynolyte dark gray primer - so I'll be waiting on that a bit for the painting. Just had too much difficulty finding a gray that I felt was dark enough to my liking for the p1.

That's what I'm using on mine. Go light on the coats, the zynolyte paint takes a long time to fully harden.

I put the try me tab back in place, just need to trim the rest of the bottom edges so they will be level for the new metal rails.

Nice smooth work there! I've yet to put mine back and was considering whether I needed to support the backside of it with a strip of thin styrene before I do the fill.

Yeah it will need some support, you could try the styrene behind it or just put some JB weld behind it.

After watching a Youtube video on JB Weld.....I think I'll pick some up and use that instead. Need to save my styrene for the fins for a later black&white build. Plus the JB Weld looks like it would come in handy for many other things as well.

Thought I'd take some time to update on my phaser upgrade project. As you know, this is time consuming and for a rookie....time consuming, difficult, and a learning effort. I've already discovered things that work for me....and things that don't. Still have a long way to go but I'm getting there. I don't have any new pictures mainly because I've spent most of my time working on this. I'll get some up soon.

Phaser 1: I've got all of the filling work done on the rear battery access and the "Try Me" tab. The Zynolyte I ordered should be here any day now and then it will be paint time after a final sanding with high grit paper.

Phaser 2: Since I was basically at a standstill on the P1, I started work on the P2. Cut off the firing nozzle, took it apart, filled the holes, filed the side ribs down as well narrowed the P1 ribs. Also filed off the top plate and cut out the plastic blocking the front window view of the P1. Enlarged the hole for the new switch and put on the side ribs. Overall, I'm happy with the ribs but I did notice that I was a little off on the off side. Thought I had this baby sanded pretty clean and prepared for painting. Put a light coat of paint on and good golly was I wrong. lol

So it appears I am going to be doing some high grit touch ups before I try another coat of paint. Thanks again to all who have shared their wisdom and work here. I wouldn't have done what I've done so far without it.

Looking forward to seeing your progress. Remember that the paint will make a difference in the way the replacement parts fit. You may need to sand some paint off in the areas where the parts fit into or carefully use an x-acto knife to remove the paint if it is too thick.

Finished trimming the plastic off the sides.

Also attached the battery cover back onto the bottom. Need to still sand a little and adjust the sides more to fit the new rails.;)

You've got this down to an art!

I have finished painting my P2 body and handle. Took some pictures that I need to put up. Still need to test fit the trigger and and fins but everything else is a go. Somehow I got a nasty run with my clear coat of the P1 top section. Needless to say it got sanded and though I'm disheartened that it is now probably not going to look that well, I have touched it up with paint and will re-coat it. I'm hoping my next project goes a little better this summer. I did grind down the fins of another P2 body flush with the body and then separated them. I'm hoping to use them as a starting point for a stencil for making fins out of styrene for a black/white build.

My time is growing less and less in the evenings as yard work and gardening time has arrived. :(

I know what you mean about time, took me several hours to get the side rails to fit correctly and I still need to adjust the p1 body for a better fit.:facepalm

Sadly, the last act of The Tressaurian Intersection is not done. It's hard to say if he will ever finish it....
That's sad they did not finish it, they did a good job on it. Very accurate set. But at 1 episode every 5 years they would have to replace the actors every other episode.
I realize the above comments were posted years ago, but "The Tressaurian Intersection" is finished and released.
