Any Maltese Falcon Fans out there ?

Clearly, the point I was making above about it being impossible to know for sure went unnoticed.... Now that I think about it, I did run across someone that claimed to own the original on another site, but they hadn't posted in years and never said. I'm sure they could say for sure, assuming you believe they aren't making a false claim. It's hard to tell on the Internet what is fake these days.

I went with black as did everyone else I've seen if that helps. It certainly looks black and that's all that matters to me.

I believe the movie was made in 1941, not 1931. Unless there is another one I am not aware of...

Four if you count The Black Bird (1975), a comedy sequel of sorts featuring George Segal. It wasn't very good, but then neither was Satan Met a Lady (1936), IMO. The 1931 version was quite good, in my opinion. It wasn't quite as good as the '41 version, of course, but I find it vastly underrated. The '41 DVD deluxe set came with the '31 and '36 versions as a bonus disc, which is where I picked those ones up. I had to grab The Black Bird from a lower quality source (VHS transfer), but at least I got to see it.

All the "Birds" (1936 is a Ram's Horn instead in Satan Met a Lady)

1931 Version (Original book cover drawing versus '31 Movie):

1936 "Ram's Horn" (instead of Falcon)

Saying it "wasn't very good" is being generous. It's a full-on comedy, but none of the jokes land. I was embarrassed for everyone involved. Sometimes there's a reason certain movies have never gotten a home video release.

EDIT: Looks like it actually did have a Betamax release at one point. Whataya know?

I've talked with the owner of Ronson Repair and apparently this combo is not in the appraisal book. The case (that is shown coming with a plain cylinder lighter) is listed as RARE and in the price range I paid. The Baronet lighter is listed as EXTREMELY RARE and by itself is worth up to twice what I paid in excellent condition. The combination should be worth a bit more than that so at least I don't feel so bad about spending the 2nd most I've ever spent on a lighter (the most being the Maltese Falcon Touch Tip lighter in near mint condition). One web site does show this combination, but it says only a couple are known to exist. I've seen photos of 4 including mine and they all have color variations so for all I know each one might be unique. Anyone play AD&D? That would make it "LEGENDARY" rare. ;) (Somehow I think more probably exist(s)(ed), but are either not known or destroyed since then).

There's a new 4K version of the Movie out, who's going to be the hero to get us new screencaps? I still want to read those framed certificates (though I'm not hopeful).

I just bought the 4K disc (It's arriving Sunday) and can rip the disc to playable on my computer, but my current monitor (and Mac) doesn't do 4K. I even scale 4K movies still to my 1080p/3D projector as there's limited actual benefit to 4K resolution, even on a 92" screen, particularly from older movies (film softens at higher resolutions). I don't know if there's a way to say "scroll around" a 4K image at lower resolutions to get details like that. HandBrake might be able "crop" off the rest of the 4K picture, leaving full resolution of just the desired area/quadrant visible at a lower resolution, though.

I've got the 4K disc. My monitor is only 1900x1200p, though. They're still not really readable at that resolution and I doubt 2160 either.

These are some grabs at 1200p (although there was some black border so it may not actually be 1200 even) and auto-leveled for brightness/contrast in Photoshop (much darker originally):

I tried using the full zoom mode in KODI.... PITA on this old Mac. I need to get a newer computer/monitor combo. I have doubts from the grain that it would actually be readable even so, though.

OK, I tried an experiment with Handbrake using cropping full resolution down to visible 1080p. This should be full resolution for this bit (I'd have to find the other chapters to encode for the calendar, etc.). Still not quite readable....

I think there’s something wrong with my Falcon statue:

Hey Spade! I got a real job for ya!

awesome, you rock. It sounds like these were made with your lower res first attempt? The one I'm most curious about is the "not pacific" diploma, if you can get any more resolution that would be great.

Which one is that, exactly? Can you provide me with a time frame. I can do a Handbrake process on it, then.
