ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

...thought I'd post an update of the Grill.

Looking good but not 100% yet. I have made corrections and will get a new one shortly.

Fit on my Denix is perfect and overall look is good, just need to adjust some minor details to match Carson's outstanding 3d model.

This piece is really a bit complicated in that we are trying to replicate a cut up and glued together set of fins that were all off center on the original HERO.

All previous attempts at making this part did so on the premise that the fins were all concentric and even with straight walls.

We have shown that this is not the case and these pics show that the profiles match very accurately to the HERO. Some of the fins are thicker than others, just like the HERO and CommLink/MerrSonn part.

This part is being replicated exactly as the HERO so that the top section is actually off center and not concentric with the lower sections as seen in some of our previous posts.

Making this part this way is not as simple as just turning it on a lathe. It needs to be turned on 2 separate centers with tapered fins and tube walls and then cored out to allow the Mauser body to fit.

Carson also made the bottom of the Grill to appear as the real bottom of the "CommLink" part, as a tube for even greater accuracy.

Please note the very slight steps and edges replicated from the HERO.

When this part is perfected it will be a thing of beauty!

let me know what you think.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Freakin gorgeous. As to the earlier query..the Marushin is inaccurate for this purpose.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Wow, other than the rounded ends on the fins that looks almost perfect! The closest prototype yet. :thumbsup

It's awesome to finally see a grill with the correct profile when fitted against a C96 mag well. :D

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

...just for fun I tried to line up a pic of my model with the grill in temp place.

It is not perfectly placed and the photo is off a bit but thought I'd let you see how close it is already.

I need to fill the Mystery disk I made earlier and re cut it smaller and move it to the correct place.

I think this shows the Grill is perfectly modeled for size and shape.

Note the offset and tapered fins all line up.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

I think Im getting giddy. I feel a tingling sensation. To be fair though its either excitement at this project or possibly a stroke....

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

This is, after all, my favorite Star Wars prop...not lightsabers or other blasters but the DL-44 and this should close the book on it after years of close but not quite.
I want to personally thank you guys for the work youve put in to this.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

it seems you are not alone.

(Has the stroke subsided?)

Carson has put hundreds of hours in these models refining and redoing them until they were as perfect as we can make them based on the material available and all the RPF members that love this prop and have discussed and shared opinions, observations and materials.

All these efforts are starting to pay off!

WONDERFUL!

One thing I´m a bit concerned about is the fact, that the parts are fitted to a Denix C96, which is not accurate in many ways. Do you expect problems when "transplanting" the parts to a MGC or a real C96? What about the cutout for the grill f.e.?!

Anyway, pure awesomeness guys!!! :thumbsup

If I'm not mistaken, they are being fit to an MGC, and they will offer non-firing Mauser blanks as well, so this shouldn't be an issue. Am I correct?

Thanks for the comments and Qs:

The Grill has been fit to the "smallest" mag well which happens to be the Denix, but this is only by a few thousandths of an inch.

It should be noted that the Denix is not "that" far off of the MGC or REAL C96 in many dimensions and is mostly off in appearance details and the way the upper receiver is positioned to the lower.

We had posted a comparison of all the frame measurements that we received from the RPF members some time back.

Carson can comment on this better as he has compared all the different frames.

The Grill is made in a way to allow the user to simply adjust the inside wall fit to the mag well by simply sanding or filing a tiny bit of material off the inner walls to allow a "custom" tight fit so there will be very little filling needed. We can post a tutorial as well if needed.

In addition, we are planning to offer an original "CommLink" pipe fitting part in black plastic so the user can cut up and glue on the grill exactly like the HERO was assembled.

All the other parts that could cause fitting issues due to the difference in frames have been addressed. Two different barrels will be offered to address this issue as well.

...and we do hope to eventually offer a new C96 frame that is being modeled by Carson off a real Mauser and including the details of the HERO.

If you think we have overlooked something please let us know.

You, Sir, Rock out loud.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Thanks everyone!

All of the blaster parts are scaled to measurements taken from a real Mauser obtained earlier on for this project. But, everything will still look great on the Denix and MGCs as well. :thumbsup

The mag-well cut in the Grill is sized for the smallest C96 base, like Pat said. Which will still fit 'some' real C96's correctly. I say some because real Mausers seem to vary quite a bit from gun to gun. But if/when the new C96 bases can be made, the Grill may possibly be offered again but with a slightly adjusted mag-well cut to better fit the new bases.

Also like Pat said, the C96 bases are being modeled completely from the real Mauser also for closer detail and scale, with changes made to mimic the correct look of the Hero C96. I can say for sure that if made correctly these can be much more suitable replicas beyond even MGCs for this particular purpose. :)

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Looks amazing. I hope the parts will finally get me to focus on upgrading my 10 year old blaster parts. I guess I could start by searching for some denix mod threads and some nice wooden grips. So as to not derail this discussion, if anyone has any tips/hints I'd love a pm.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Hi Chris,

There is a lot of info on mod-ing the Denix on the RPF.

We will prob be posting, along with others here some assembly mods and ideas so people can follow along and pick and choose the level they want to go to.

We have tried to make all the parts as easy as possible to use while keeping the highest level of accuracy.

Most mods should be fairly easy to attach. I'm sure we will have a lot of interesting alternatives discussed along the way.

stay tuned!

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Has anyone scratch built the DL-44 on a metal airsoft mauser? It looks like It's be fun finding pieces to epoxy together to decorate one :D
