Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Ok... time for an update.

I went to visit the shop doing the parts today, about 45 mins away, was like a monsoon driving!

The good news is that things are progressing! The past 2 weeks were spent mostly ordering materials and programing the CNC from Deadbolt's 3d models which takes a bit of time to get correct.

These are very accurate and detailed models and we want to get it perfect so the set I ordered will be the test set to compare to the HERO for look and to make sure all the parts fit properly.

Unfortunately there was not a lot of metal cut yet but we went over some important details like the knurling and hardware.

I will post some pics of the FH in progress shortly.

He needs to make or a special order a cutter for the bullet knurls to get the right look. As was discussed early on, these need to be cut with a radial cutter rather than an ball mill to get the right look and 3mm radial cutters are not that readily available in the US I am told. Either way it will be done correctly!

I will keep you posted as I get more. I am pushing as hard as I can, but for the price I think he is giving us, I don't want to upset the cart.

He is working on the Grill and mount now but did not get pics yet.

FH pics to follow...

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

...here the straight knurls are being cut rather than rolled. We were trying to get the depth just right for look and feel.

The FH is being held in a special fixture from the inside. The inner cuts are already there and finished.

Next time I go I'll bring my camera to get better pics. The parts should be more finished by then.

There are a lot of parts being made so this will take just a little longer, but it will be worth the wait!

Just so you know, the scope alone has 11 parts not including the hardware.

Hope to have more next week.

Okay, I won't be able to stop smiling for a while now...

Very, very Exciting!! :D

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

I was really hoping for some nice oldschool rolled knurling. :cry

The cut knurling on mine is the major part, next to the slighly oversized "bullets", that bothers me most at it - still a nice replica, but i so was hoping you will have yours made rolled, to replace my cut version.

Btw. - instead of spending a lot of time on cutting all these hundred cuts with a endmill ..... there are tools out there that work and look like standard rolling knurlers, but are cutting supersharp knurls:

Rändelfräswerkzeuge

With them it´s just a few seconds to have a flashhider cut: zeus® Rändelfräswerkzeug RF1 Serie 231 - Längsrändelung - YouTube

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Thanks for the input. I also thought it would be faster and more accurate to do the rolled knurl. I will forward the info you sent... still time to adjust for the run.

This is the time for alterations! Glad you spoke up. I will ask about this detail.

... it's not too late!

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Rolled Knurl would be great as long as it can keep the correct spacing between the knurls. :thumbsup

If rolled it might be difficult to get it so that the knurls don't get too close together and form points, which would make for a noticeably inaccurate knurl compared to the Hero FH.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Only way to tell for sure is to test them and compare. I'll keep you posted.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

The tool i linked in my post may look like a standard knurler, but in fact it does cut the knurling, not making it by pressure. In german we call them Rändelfräser - rändel = knurling and fräser = endmill. just to clarify it´s function, it´s no usuall oldstyle knurler. I just mentioned them as a possible way to make the same sharp groves as with a endmill, but in a fraction of the time of milling.

Oldschool rolled would be great -if it "looks" right i would prefer it, even if not with the exact amount of knurls - over the exact amount but to modern sharp cut. Both wouldn´t be perfect, but in my book the vintage look would be higher valued.

In the end it comes down to "test and compare", as you mentioned.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Oh, that looks nice! I hope there will be a interestlist? Because I really would like one of these.

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

Once all the prototype parts are made and inspected for any necessary changes, there will definetely be an interest thread started when we're sure everything's ready. :thumbsup

Re: ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion

...well here is the first FH from Carson's models. Overall I think it's very good. We may tweak a few things after we have time to really compare but so far so good!

I think if you look at the HERO and this, it is very close. The knurls look right, not overly deep, the bullet knurls are correct. (remember the HERO is worn a bit)

The angle and quality of the pic is not great but hey, he's a machinist, not a photographer. I'll take better ones soon, just wanted to post what I had so far, I know you are all waiting... patiently...

Let me know what you think...
