ANH Hero DL-44 Discussion - Three ANH Greeblies Found

That’s coming along really nicely V!

All personal differences aside it looks like that replica Mauser is a little off compared to the actual film prop. Maybe it’s more inline to the Bespin or Stembridge prop?

Thanks man!

And as far as I know Chris' steel C96 replicas were based directly off a live fire Mauser that he owned, so dimensionally it should be a reasonable approximation of an actual C96. Of course, being that all of the real guns had a large degree of hand work done on them from the factory it's safe to say that no two would ever be exactly the same, and the Hero prop's also had its own unique touches (Carson's lump, the shallow rail grooves on the lefthand side, etc).

I have done a LOT my own little tweaks as I've gone along (modifying the arm sear assembly, shifting the upper forward to get the hammer to stand upright properly, tweaking the trigger to lean at the right angle, etc), but one of these days I'll likely have to just bite the bullet and call it done enough for Scott to (hopefully) finish off.

Maybe someday I'll pick up one of Chris' newer steel C96 replicas and try my hand at a second one though, which might be fun.

Well, I've finally seen the light. Never going back again.

Might share some anecdotal images soon.

I've always hated birchwood products since I was a kid, sure they blacken and all, but they tend to encourage corrosion rather than prevent it..
..but, I did like blue wonder for a little while, until it killed the finish on a '25 Colt of mine I was just trying to touch-up..which it says in the description/instructions that it wouldn't harm 'Factory Bluing'..sadly, it can and did.

I usually just stick with OxphoBlue these days, It's not corrosive and hasn't harmed a single hot-blued, or rust-blued piece thus far. It even works on keeping a mirror polished zamac, zinc alloy replica (like MGC, Tomenosuke) without killing your polished surface in any way.

BlueWonder is dandy for a full re-finish, but I wouldn't recommend it for touch-ups..I found out that the hard way..

Also it might not be fully relevant, but I think I might have noticed that the RotJ "bunker" blaster seems to have a lanyard ring in the mounting stud of the grip frame. Has anyone else noticed this?

To me, this not only makes it highly likely to be made from a live fire C96 (never seen an MGC with a lanyard ring), but also less likely to be the original Mauser for the hero prop considering it didn't have one either.

My first attempt at stamping the scope mounts numbers!

I got a little low with the 6, but for a first try I don't think it looks too bad :) For the next try on one of my other scopes, I might glue a small straight edge to the bottom of the mount to enure the numbers line up.

Just got my new, second Field Marshal steel C96 in the mail, so thanks again to Chris for the order! He was also kind enough to include a spare part or two for my run 1 Hero build that I needed, which was much appreciated. :)

That being said I am noticing that a few of the cuts seem to be rather different to his older generation Mauser (particularly on the upper), some of which I'm not sure are quite accurate to the Hero prop or any real C96 that I've seen (along with possible machining flaws), which is a bit disappointing. Still, I don't want to bog things down here with nitpicks or critiques, especially when Chris was kind enough to go out of his way to bail me out of missing some minor components that had gotten lost in the mess that is my basement shop.

Perhaps I could make a separate thread respectfully outlining some of the minor points I see to be corrected on any future batches of Mauser replicas?

But those aside, I'll likely begin tinkering away on a second Hero build, one that corrects at least some of the mistakes I made on my very first pass at it (which itself will be headed off to Scott now that I got my replacement parts).

The journey continues...

Got most the upper dialed in I believe. The reason for so many parts within the Bull Barrel design is because I want it to be lose as well as to retain strength..
