Anakin Starkiller FX V2 - Aging Weathering & Stencil Tutorial (Master Thread)

View attachment 960373 Nice! Really could throw someone for a loop with a setup like that.

Also, I don’t think anyone has posted this, but seeing the MK1 next to the V2 has created a greater appreciation for the narrative of the shared stunt based off the MK1.
It’s really something special and Anakin Starkillers V2 captures the magic of the lineage for sure

Wicked!!

I thought I’d ask the question here as it’s while lacquering a v2 that the issues arrised. I was lacquering outside and it bloody started to rain. There are 3 – 5 white spots in the lacquer.

I’m wondering if anyone (nudges Halliwax) has come across this while lacquering before and what tips they have to resolve. From what I can see on you tube heat is a very good remedy to extract the moisture.

I’m not too concerned with the hilt having a gloss finish if heated as I can always bang on another layer of matt lacquer.

Got a picture of your issue? As for dulling the paint I used to use a satin finish, the dull it by dry brushing some acetone on a rag and buffing the paint that way

Now I work backwards and use a flat black and buff it in certain areas, far easier

Get me a picture of these white stains please

As for heat, I always heat my products before painting.. I can’t however do this with the V2’s because of the stencils..

Painting has come to a complete halt for me right now.. 27 today.. haven’t seen 40s in awhile. I’m actually installing electric heat in my shed this weekend so I can paint these V2’s

Thanks I'll take a snap when I get home in a few hours. They are small dots here and there and wasn’t sure what it was when I checked it this morning but it has to be the rain. Any videos about whitening on lacquer are due to moisture in the air and most of them are recommending treating with heat.

Interesting what you’re saying about a satin lacquer. I've found the matt ones really make the metal seem really dull, I guess a no brainer right, but the satin makes the black paint too shiny. I’ll have a look into acetone dulling the satin over the patches of black paint.

Good luck with the v2’s…. How many have you got to paint? I’ve pre ordered a Solo’s Hold v2 and was thinking about sending you a message about a commissioning you to weather it.

Heat didn't work. Think lacquer too thin. Just used an ear bud with acetone and it took it off. Will let it dry and have a look at the finish before replying more lacquer.

bahh! i wouldn't worry about those dots.. if you look at my weathering i scrap some of the patina off in areas. the real prop has the same thing.. theres really 3-4 layers of aging going on in the booster section

Swab of acetone and a respray fixed it up a treat.

I should have some progress done this weekend

This weather is all over the place, I have however devised a plan :cautious:

How goes it with the clamp weathering tutorial? No rush, of course, but I’d rather see what the King of V2s has up his sleeve before I proceed!

Lol!! Yup, looks like they forgot the Nip

So yesterday I finished the electric heat install

It was 19 degrees yesterday and the little heater worked flawless. So next weekend I should have some forward progress to share

Been quiet here, but the weather has been nasty..

Don’t feel comfortable using my propane heater anymore because we now have a generator in the shed, my dads lawnmower and a bunch of gas cans.. this is why I switched over to electric heat. Before I could just push the lawnmower outside but now with the generator locked in place..

I don’t like the idea of open flames in such a small area with closed windows

Want to thank everyone for their patience

Good news on the install! It’s oddly mild in my neck of the woods (Midlands, England). It’s just starting to go cold but not that chilly.

I have yet another KR v2 to work on. Just arrived this morning. I’ll be taking my time and will try not to do anything by guestimate. Can I refer back to my question above about the orientation of the dents on the emitter in comparison to the central Trooper Trent stencil line?

These are the ones just being finished up atm. Low light so they look super dark. The top is satin finish and the bottom Matt. I much prefer the Matt, a shiny thin-neck looks a little odd. Will be using your dust guide tonight to finish everything up.

That heater is going to help a ton! It’s been mid 30s here and I think that’s too cold to work outside.

What exactly did you need again? A shot of where to put the dents on the KR V2?
