Twenty-three years in the making, I've finally finished the 1998 AMT/ERTL Rancor vinyl model kit (the Gamorean was finished shortly after I bought it - it's taken all this time to putty and paint the beast), by far the best vinyl kit they ever did. Expertly sculpted by James Groman, I'm amazed AMT/ERTL were able to reproduce it without the awful shrinkage that the Star Trek figure kits experienced. Truly an excellent model, but man what a complicated painting project - I don't know how many coats I did to try and get close to the screen images I found (I've never actually painted a dinosaur or a beast like this before).
He's a bit gorier than in the movie - I added dried blood around his mouth, claws & belly, and some fresh blood to the inside of his mouth and teeth, and tinted the super glue-over-fishing line drool with Tamiya Clear Red. I'm pleased with how it came out, but you couldn't pay me enough money to do another one. Plus, I’m out of paint.
