Amazon's Lord of the Rings (tv series)

Nothing births a remake like a lack of original ideas and an unquenchable thirst for money.
I know, it's like these studios are looking to make money or something and have board members, investors, & stock holders pushing these studio to turn ever increasingly more profit. It's so weird that these studios looking to make a profit would look to an IP with name recognition that makes them think it might be successful for them. I mean, why wouldn't they spend tons of money on creating something based on an obscure IP with only a fraction of the name recognition of LotR and risk having a huge flop on their hands because of it.

In other news something fresh popped up on my radar this morning..

The Fall Guy
(There best be a Lee Majors cameo, that old veteran stuntman who shows the kid how to win the lady of his dreams)

So, on the one hand, meh, whatever, I'll watch it as something to do. No high expectations here. I think the showrunners are not amazing at adapting stuff and are, like the GOT showrunners, more into "rule of cool."

On the other hand, why the FRAK would you show your big reveal moment IN THE DAMN TRAILER?!?!?!

Showrunner 1: "How do we get human Sauron/Halbrand who is played by Charlie Vickers to return to the Elves as Annatar and gain their trust enough?"

Showrunner 2: "Easy peasy! We Clark-Kentify him by giving him a blonde wig and pointy ears! The Elves... and our audience... won't know the difference!"

I'm hoping season 2 is a bit better than the first season, but honestly I'm just happy to see more visually compelling stories being told in this world. They can't all be absolutely amazing, but hey, it's still a pretty fun watch.

Watched S2 E1 and it was okay but was kind of bored and found myself not caring. When I saw there were two more available already, instead being excited, I found myself reacting like it would be a chore to watch two more until another comes next week. Then I realized that that was a sign I'm not into it and should probably just write it off. Although I do like Durin and his wife and the thumbnail indicates they're in E2, so I might give it one last shot.

The tone seems to want us to have some empathy for Sauron at times. No, man. No.
Also the metal smith elf looks so much like Michael Palin it takes me out of the story every time I see him.

I saw a clip where an orc has this sad moment of saying goodbye to his orc wife and orc baby before going off to war. What? Orcs are wholly evil as described by Tolkien. Now we're supposed to have sympathy for them? If people still don't realize the people behind this show don't know what the heck they're doing, I don't know what else to say.

Oh, and I guess Galadriel has the hots for Sauron now.

Tolkien struggled with this in his later years, since, as they were living beings, they could not be WHOLLY irredeemable, especially given T's theology. He even toyed with the idea they were actually descended from men, thus "apt to evil" , then switched back to elves as their source, but he never came up with a good solution. But he did firmly state, yes, orcs "had life and multiplied after the manner of the Children of Ilúvatar" i.e. had children, families and clans.

I have a feeling that when Sauron makes the One Ring, the orcs will be enslaved completely to his will.

I didn't even finish the first episode. It was everything I hoped it would not be.
It's close to being the worst TV series I've ever seen. It is dull and poorly written, and the writers don't understand what made Tolkien's work so important. Shame. I wanted it to succeed.

Absolutely and I should've clarified it. A society that is wholly evil cannot realistically function and Tolkien did indeed struggle to reconcile that notion. Thank you for pointing it out. Though I don't recall that Tolkien ever wished to have them viewed as sympathetic in any way.

Enjoyed the first two episode. The third was a little boring. I just find the Numenor stuff uninteresting. Overall an improvement from the 1st season, but they have too many plot threads going. They need to tighten things up a little.

Overall I am enjoying it.

I know it is probably sacrilege, but I actually like this series better than the movie adaptations

Most of that is probably due to less familiarity with the stuff in the Silmarillion and no real connection to any of the characters

For me the movies were a bit disappointing, and many characters were just not what I had pictured in my head like having "Agent Smith" from the Matrix as Elrond seemed a weird casting choice and I also never bought into Viggo Mortensen's portrayal of Aragorn. Was disappointed with Faramir as well as Theoden. They all seemed to be lacking. Gandalf and Golum were perfect though

With Rings of Power I had less invested and I am sure they crapped all over canon, but I don't care as much and am just enjoying it for what it is

I think Elrond and Galadriel are closer to what I imagine as well

I also think the new Adar actor is also better than the first season actor

Did watch ep2, and again did enjoy the Dwarf stuff. The characters and performances are very likeable and entertaining. Hanging on for now. If it gets down to it maybe I FF all non-Dwarf scenes.
